Do you want your work to make a difference for NSW?

Working to protect the state’s environment and heritage.

About the role

The Biodiversity and Ecological Health Branch is seeking a Project Officer Ecologist to work as part of the feral predator-free area program team contributing to one of the most significant threatened fauna restoration projects in NSW history that will deliver measurable conservation benefit for at least 50 threatened animal species. With the aim to reintroduce native mammal species listed as extinct in NSW and to restore ecosystem function, this is your opportunity to be a part of this history making program!

The role is suited to Ecologists with strong experience in the reporting of biodiversity, threats and ecosystems health. Supervising up to two direct reports, you’ll be responsible for undertaking project management, monitoring, evaluation and reporting to support activities that contribute to the reintroduction of locally extinct species at the Yathong Nature Reserve feral predator-free area, near Cobar, with a fenced area of up to 40,000 hectares. The role will involve regular travel for extended periods to Yathong Nature Reserve staying in shearer’s accommodation.

About You

Your passion for the environment and expertise in biodiversity and ecological health monitoring and/or translocations will be key to your success in this role. You'll be adept in providing high level specialist advice and information to stakeholders on emerging project issues to support project development and delivery in line with established plans, budgets, timeframes, policy and environmental objectives and other projects and priorities. Ideally you’ll be a strong decision-maker with the ability to lead operations at times and solve problems in the field. You’ll enjoy working as part of a team but be able to work alone or with minimal supervision. The role may be required to undertake field work, including day and night surveys sometime in inclement weather conditions. This will require a willingness to work in these conditions and a sound level of physical fitness.

Essential requirements

* A relevant degree / tertiary qualification or extensive experience in science, ecology, or related fields
* Current Australian drivers Licence
* Willing and able to assist with ecological fieldwork which involves travel
