As a department our purpose is to help the community to prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from the impact of fire and emergency events.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) is the primary provider of fire, rescue and emergency management programs and services throughout Queensland. The department encompasses the Fire and Rescue Service, disaster management services, the Rural Fire Service and the State Emergency Service, and also supports other volunteer groups providing emergency response to Queenslanders.
QFES is one department with many services, many capabilities and many partners.
Purpose of the role
HR Services is responsible for providing professional advice and support to regional and state office managers and staff across the employee lifecycle including employee entitlements, HR systems, establishment management and local recruitment and selection. The team is also responsible for designing, developing and delivering HR initiatives, policies and resources to ensure compliance and best practice in alignment with whole-of-government, departmental and business unit needs.
Reporting to the Executive Manager, you will be a key member of the team and will work closely with Queensland Shared Services, Senior HR Advisors, other QFES People professionals as well as internal and external stakeholders to ensure HR-related systems functionality, configuration, business processes and resources meet legislative obligations and maximise workforce capability. You will play an important role in organisational change, projects and initiatives, including identifying risks and providing constructive advice to influence strategic decision making across the department.

- Knowledge, experience or qualifications in contemporary HR management and best practice.
- Knowledge or experience in payroll functionality and configuration.
Your key accountabilities
Your part in the ongoing success of our department, in supporting frontline services will see you responsible for a variety of work, including, but not limited to:
- Lead and manage the efficient and effective utilisation, functionality and compliance assessment of payroll solutions including the provision of strategic, tactical and operational advice to influence decision-making processes.
- Draw insights from collaborative research to design, develop, implement and improve systems, policy, procedures and resources.
- Maintain knowledge of HR practices and systems, emerging trends and industrial instruments to manage change, ensure governance and compliance, and identify opportunities for business improvement.
- Prepare and present high-level reports, correspondence and briefings relating to a range of complex human resource management issues and initiatives in accordance with departmental requirements.
- Represent QFES and participate in HR projects and working groups to ensure outcomes are delivered within agreed timeframes and meet business needs.
- Build HR capability across the workforce and enable managers to meet their ongoing responsibility for effective and proactive people management.
- Build team capability through coaching others, providing performance feedback, conflict resolution and encouraging career development.
