About This Opportunity The Research Assistant plays a valued role within the Whitmire Lab, contributing to inquisitive, purpose‑driven research that advances understanding through innovative experimentation and technical capability. Working as part of a collaborative and supportive laboratory environment, this role undertakes software and hardware development tasks, supports experimental activity, and ensures research operations are conducted safely, accurately and efficiently in line with University standards. Key responsibilities will include: Coordinating aspects of scientific and technical activities, including the application of specialist technical skills in software engineering and scientific instrumentation. Safely operating and assisting with the setup of research equipment and technologies, including fluorescent microscopes, sensory stimulators, and other complex or unusual experimental apparatus. Supporting senior staff with routine and more complex experiments, demonstrations, and research programs, including accurate monitoring, adjustment and recording of processes. Maintaining clean, safe and compliant laboratory spaces, equipment and facilities, and contributing to the safe storage, handling and disposal of chemicals, equipment and specimens. This is a part-time (40%), fixed-term position up to December 2026 at HEW Level 4. About You Completion of a diploma level qualification with relevant work-related experience; or a Certificate IV with relevant experience; or a post‑trades certificate with extensive relevant experience and on‑the‑job training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Foundational knowledge of software, hardware and scientific instrumentation, with the ability to apply technical or engineering knowledge in a research setting. An understanding of research environments and the dynamic, evolving nature of scientific projects. Demonstrated experience working effectively in a team‑based environment, with a collaborative and inclusive approach. High‑level interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage constructively with researchers and technical staff. Self‑motivation and strong organisational skills, enabling you to prioritise workloads and meet research deadlines with accuracy and care.
