Team Lead – Engineering (Data Reliability)
Join Xero as a Team Lead in the Data Reliability team, driving the strategic evolution of our database domain.
Overview
You will manage and mentor a group of engineers while modernising our data layer and supporting the migration toward open‑source technologies such as Postgres and Dynamo DB.
Your leadership will help create a world‑class engineering culture that delivers high‑quality software predictably and sustainably.
Responsibilities Lead the DRE – Ca SH team, an experienced group of senior engineers based primarily across Melbourne and Auckland, NZ.
Drive the Modernisation Drive – Strategically moving Xero towards modern, open‑source database technologies (Postgres, Dynamo DB).
Optimize delivery using Lean‑Agile techniques, ensuring the delivery pipeline flows at a predictable, sustainable pace.
Ensure operational health by managing the support roster, setting clear customer SLAs, and consistently actioning post‑incident learnings.
Advance technical standards by coaching the team to adhere to Xero's Engineering Standards and fostering sustainable excellence.
Qualifications Proven experience managing software delivery teams with Lean‑Agile methodologies.
Strong people‑leadership skills – capable of leading a large team and engaging in authentic conversations around wellbeing and growth.
Excellent communication skills to translate complex technical insights into actionable items for product teams.
Expertise with database technologies, preferably including two or more of SQL Server, Postgres, or Dynamo DB.
A growth mindset with a love of learning that supports your team's development.
Expert understanding of the interface between applications and databases for building performant, stable data stores.

This is a Team Lead position for candidates based in Australia.
We use a hybrid model that balances the flexibility of remote work with the strength of in‑person collaboration for key team activities and building team health.
