Haskoning Australia operates in Sydney, Newcastle and Brisbane, providing independent strategic advisory, design, engineering, environmental, and project management services to companies in Australia and nearby regions. First Marine International (FMI) is the shipyard technology and maritime market research group within Haskoning and leads in shipyard design, performance improvement, and marine market research.


What you will do

The senior role delivers high-quality consultancy services to FMI clients and enhances the FMI team with additional technical expertise, focusing on shipyard design and performance improvement, with involvement in marine market research. You will bring substantial shipyard and industrial experience adaptable to maritime consultancy, initially under supervision, and develop to manage projects solo or as part of an FMI team. You will represent the company before clients (with supervision at first) and aim to present credible, accurate, objective solutions considering risk and liability.


Responsibilities

* Develop specialist expertise in shipyard design and contribute to related technical areas.
* Contribute to FMI services and support wider Haskoning activities.
* Manage projects or work independently to deliver on time, within budget, and to quality standards.
* Conduct research into shipyard-related topics.
* Travel within Australia and internationally as required.
* Develop and expand FMI technical capabilities.
* Foster a harmonious working environment and contribute to teamwork.
* Promote the company’s work through publications and conference papers.
* Mentor and train colleagues as needed.
* Manage one or more key FMI client accounts.
* Contribute to and/or lead business development activities, including proposals.
* Support FMI’s presence and operations in Australia.
* Liaise with the existing Haskoning team in Sydney (civil engineers and environmental specialists).
* Perform analysis and produce high-quality reports.
* Operate company systems and tools as required.

What you bring

* Experience in ship, submarine and/or yacht construction, repair, or shipyard operations (including offshore and shipbuilding processes).
* Specialist skills in steel ship fabrication and consolidation and an interest in transferring to consultancy.
* Experience as a consultant or willingness to transition to this sector (training provided).
* Intellectual curiosity, self-motivation, and commitment to continuous development and new technology.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including strong report writing.
* High numeracy, analytical skills, and computer literacy.
* Energetic, motivated, and able to work independently or in a team.
* Fluent in written and spoken English.
* Willing and able to travel within Australia and internationally as required.
* Degree or diploma in naval architecture, marine engineering, or related discipline.
* Minimum ten years’ experience in shipyards, including some shipyard or project management experience.
* Chartered engineer or working towards chartership; membership of a professional institution(s).
* Active NV1 Defence Security Clearance (candidates with NV1 or above only).
