About the role
The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) is establishing a merit pool for Aviation Medical Officers within the Client Services Centre Branch. As an Aviation Medical Officer, you will contribute to aviation safety by undertaking aviation medical certification assessments for pilots and air traffic controllers. Working under supervision and guidance, you will apply clinical expertise to assess medical information, review specialist reports, and support risk-based decisions regarding fitness for aviation duties within a regulatory environment.
The Aviation Medical Officer role is a developmental position designed to build capability in aviation medical certification under senior clinical supervision.
This role provides an opportunity for medical practitioners to apply their clinical skills in aviation and regulatory medicine while developing expertise in aeromedical assessment. The role may require occasional interstate travel.
Key responsibilities
* Undertake aviation medical certificate assessments under supervision, including review of clinical information, specialist reports and operational risk considerations.
* Prepare certification determinations and correspondence outlining medical reasoning, conditions, surveillance requirements and follow-up actions under clinical supervision.
* Liaise with applicants, Designated Aviation Medical Examiners (DAMEs), and treating practitioners to obtain clinical information.
* Contribute to complex case discussions.
* Escalate complex or high-risk cases to senior medical officers for review and decision where required.
* Support research, analysis and development of educational materials where required.
* Engage professionally with regulated entities and aviation stakeholders.

* Interest in developing expertise in aviation or regulatory medicine.
