The Tasmanian Aboriginal Legal Service (TALS) has an opportunity for a lawyer to join our team and support clients with a range of criminal matters in our Hobart office.
TALS specialises in providing advice and support in the areas of criminal, civil, and family law to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in Tasmania, and does so in a culturally appropriate, inclusive, and supportive way. We also influence policy and law reform.

The role
As a Criminal Lawyer with TALS, you will provide advice, information, and representation in a variety of criminal matters within the southern region and across Tasmania. The role also involves providing community legal education and working closely with the team to ensure our clients receive culturally considered legal assistance.

As a Criminal Lawyer with TALS, you will provide advice, information, and representation in a variety of criminal matters within the southern region and across Tasmania. Duties:
1. Undertake simple to medium-level case work, dispute resolution, and advocacy in courts (proven experience in the Magistrates Court will be looked upon favourably).
2. Undertake community legal education as directed.
3. Assist with on-call legal advice to clients out of hours.
4. Provide culturally responsive and appropriate services to clients and community stakeholders.
5. You will maintain an ongoing commitment to grow cultural knowledge and understanding of issues impacting TALS clients.

4. Basic competency in the use of MS Office and the capacity to quickly acquire competency in the use of the TALS client database.

Requirements
The successful candidate will need to undergo a National Police Check and apply for a Working with Vulnerable Persons registration.
Admission or eligibility for admission as a legal practitioner in Tasmania.
