Primary objective
The position will lead the design and implementation of terrestrial biodiversity baseline assessment, monitoring and applied
research programs to address strategic knowledge gaps across the Northern Territory. The position will also provide
authoritative advice around ecosystem management and monitoring to diverse users and stakeholders and will develop and
maintain partnerships relating to ecosystem management, monitoring and research.

Context statement
The Flora and Fauna Division is responsible for provision of technical and policy advice on terrestrial and aquatic biodiversity
conservation and management in the Northern Territory. This includes responsibilities for mapping of areas of high
conservation value, biodiversity survey and monitoring, assessing the biodiversity impacts of development proposals, the
management of threatened species, provision of advice on biodiversity matters, and the maintenance of the Territory’s
biodiversity data sets.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Design and implement complex terrestrial biodiversity survey, monitoring and applied research programs across the

Northern Territory.
2. Prepare technical reports and other communication media for diverse audiences.
3. Liaise and work with land managers and landowners to undertake field projects.
4. Support the sustainable development of the Northern Territory through the provision of scientific and technical advice

to inform management and policy.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. A relevant tertiary qualification in terrestrial ecology or equivalent.
2. Demonstrated experience in managing ecosystem-scale wildlife survey, monitoring and applied research projects to meet

budget, timeline and output requirements.
3. Demonstrated experience in the analysis of complex terrestrial environmental datasets, including statistical and modelling

applications.
4. Demonstrated advanced written and oral scientific communication skills.
5. Demonstrated staff management skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
6. Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strategic partnerships and liaise effectively with a variety of stakeholders.
7. Demonstrated ability to supervise staff and logistics for remote area field trips, ensuring that Standard Operating

Procedures and Work Health and Safety guidelines are followed.
8. Current Australian driver’s licence.

Desirable
1. Post graduate qualifications in terrestrial ecology or equivalent.
2. Detailed knowledge of the flora and fauna of the Northern Territory.

Further information
This position has a significant fieldwork component with a requirement to work in both the southern and northern regions
of the Northern Territory. Ability to travel out of Darwin/Alice Springs for extended periods may be required.
