We're looking for a skilled and safety-conscious Mechanical Tradesperson to join our team maintaining and upgrading critical water and sewerage infrastructure across the Shire. This hands-on role involves working on a wide range of mechanical systems—from treatment plants and pumping stations to recreational facilities and landfill sites—ensuring reliability, environmental protection, and public health. You'll bring broad trade skills, confined space competence, and the ability to supervise others, including apprentices and contractors. Participation in a 24-hour on-call roster (one week in five) and residence within the designated response area are required. About the role:

* Install, maintain, repair and upgrade mechanical equipment across water supply, sewerage, and other Council facilities including treatment plants, pumping stations, and recreational sites.
* Participate in a 24-hour on-call roster (currently one week in five) to respond to critical mechanical failures within a 30-minute response time.
* Work in confined spaces and high-risk environments with a strong focus on workplace health and safety.
* Supervise and direct apprentices, assistants, contractors and other staff during maintenance and project work.
* Source and order replacement parts, liaise with internal teams and the public, and carry out additional duties as required by the Supervisor.

We are seeking:

* A suitably qualified candidate eligible to hold a Trade Certificate in Fitting and Machining or a related Mechanical field.
* Ability to meet 24-hour on-call emergency response requirements, including being contactable outside normal hours and responding within Council-specified timeframes.
* Strong literacy and numeracy skills to interpret technical manuals, follow job instructions, and maintain accurate work records.
* A safety-focused individual with demonstrated knowledge of workplace safety procedures and experience working in confined spaces and high-risk environments.
* A capable supervisor who can lead staff, plan and assess work independently, and support effective teamwork on-site.
* A clear communicator with the ability to collaborate with supervisors and engineers and develop technical skills across a wide range of equipment and systems.

Where it's located:


This position is based in Chinderah, and can be directed to work from any Council work site.
