About Carers Tasmania and Care2Serve
Carers Tasmania is the Peak Body representing the more than 87,000 informal carers within the state.
A carer is a person who provides unpaid care and support to a family member, or friend, with disability, mental ill health, a chronic or life-limiting condition, alcohol or other drug dependence, or who is frail or aged. Informal kinship carers who care for a child under the age of 18, because the parent is unable to, are also recognised as carers. Carers are predominantly family members, but may also be friends, neighbours, or colleagues. Informal carers are not to be confused with paid support workers who are often called 'carers', with the difference being that support workers are fully employed and remunerated with all the benefits of employment. On the contrary, family and friend carers perform their caring duties without remuneration, other than minimal carer payments and allowances from the Australian Government.
In addition to representing carers through the Peak Body activities, Carers Tasmania provides support to carers living in Tasmania through its service delivery arm, Care2Serve. The Australian Government Carer Gateway program is delivered through Care2Serve in Tasmania, as are other supports and services, such as the Tasmanian Government's Home and Community Care program.
About the Board
The Carers Tasmania/Care2Serve Joint Board (the Board) is responsible for the governance, management and strategic direction of Carers Tasmania and Care2Serve. The Board has ultimate accountability for Carers Tasmania and Care2Serve activities and performance.
Board positions are voluntary and the Board meets six times per year. The schedule for meetings is agreed at the commencement of each year. Board meetings are conducted face-to-face and via Microsoft Teams. The Board also holds a longer strategic meeting once per year to focus on strategic imperatives in greater detail and enable discussion amongst Directors.
Director Responsibilities
Director commitment and active participation in Board meetings, AGM and strategic planning is essential. All Board Directors are expected to comply with the Directors' Code of Conduct and maintain a current Registration to Work with Vulnerable People, National Police Check, and Director ID.
Directors must be considered suitably responsible people in accordance with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profit Commission's (ACNC) Governance Standard 4, and must not be disqualified from managing a corporation under the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth) or banned from being a responsible person of a registered charity by the ACNC Commissioner.
Each director must fulfil the roles and responsibilities required under Governance Standard 5 of the ACNC:
* To act with reasonable care and diligence
* To act honestly and fairly in the best interests of the charity and for its charitable purposes
* Not to misuse their position or information they gain as a responsible person
* To disclose conflicts of interest
* To ensure that the financial affairs of the charity are managed responsibly
* Not to allow the charity to operate while it is insolvent
