As Ranger in Charge with the Great Barrier Reef & Marine Parks Region, you'll guide a skilled team delivering infrastructure, conservation, compliance and visitor management across the Whitsundays. Based in Airlie Beach, this role combines leadership, hands-on operational delivery and work in a World Heritage Area.
Position status: Fixed Term Temporary; Position type: Flexible full-time; Occupational group: Primary Industry & Environment; Classification: OO6; Workplace Location: Mackay region. Closing date: 22 May 2026. Salary details: Total remuneration as defined by the agency. Job duration: Until 27 November 2026 with possible extension.
Role focus
* Lead and manage a team of six staff to deliver operational work plans, infrastructure projects, maintenance programs and park management initiatives within budget and resource allocations.
* Coordinate park management activities including infrastructure development and maintenance, natural and cultural resource management, fire management, weed and pest control, emergency response planning and plant/equipment operations.
* Build and maintain effective relationships with stakeholders, including government agencies, industry groups, recreational users, commercial operators, neighbouring landholders and Traditional Owners, while supporting community engagement and customer service outcomes.
* Oversee administrative, compliance and enforcement activities, including planning, reporting, investigations, records management, and fostering a culturally inclusive workplace for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Responsibilities

Location, travel and work conditions
Based in Airlie Beach with regular travel throughout the Whitsunday Management Unit and field operations aboard a modern vessel fleet. Extended trips at sea are possible. Rosters may include weekends and public holidays with travel and overtime provisions. This is a physically demanding role with field conditions in remote tropical environments, sun exposure, and extended hours.
Qualifications
* Automatic/unrestricted manual driver's licence.
