About Collection Services Group
The Collections Services Group is responsible for the development, management, preservation and provision of access to the AIATSIS Collection at both Maraga (Canberra) and Mparntwe (Central Australia) sites. The Group manages, describes, preserves digitises and provides access to the AIATSIS Collection.
About AIATSIS Central Australia
The Central Australia facility in Alice Springs is the first regional facility for AIATSIS outside of Ngunnawal Country (ACT). It provides culturally appropriate digitisation and storage capacity along with local training opportunities. The facility supports the preservation of community-held collection materials and repatriation of Indigenous collections and cultural information. It also delivers services to improve searching and accessing the AIATSIS Collection, training opportunities and learning opportunities through exploration of our exhibition space as well as cultural research including family history.
About the Role
The Assistant Director Community Engagement & Access will engage with communities, host visitors, and oversee access and use of the AIATSIS Collections to strengthen and promote knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and heritage. This is a key management position within the organisation.
The successful applicant will support the Director Central Australia and work closely with the Director Collection Access & Family History, to ensure discoverability and accessibility of the AIATSIS collection with Central Australian clients.
Key responsibilities of the role include:
* with support from the Assistant Director Collection Access and Assistant Director Family History, provide collection access and family history services to Central Australian clients.
* engage and develop strong productive relationships with Communities to create opportunities for people to encounter and engage with the story of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australia.
* lead, train, and supervise a small team that provides Community engagement, collection access, and family history services to Central Australian clients.
* represent AIATSIS and develop, work collaboratively, and maintain relationships with key AIATSIS stakeholders including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, AIATSIS staff, and staff at other cultural institutions.
* manage culturally appropriate services including facilitating collection access and use as well as reference and family history services aligned to conditional and Indigenous Cultural Intellectual Property requirements, policies, and legislation.
* provide written reports on operational activities including statistical reports, briefs, and more complex correspondence.
* participate in and contribute to various network and stakeholder meetings, forums, conferences etc.
Our Ideal Candidate
To be successful in this role, you will understand the role of a major specialist collection in meeting the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This includes understanding of Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property Rights, Indigenous cultural protocols and related cultural safety issues. You will come with the following skills, experience and attributes:
* demonstrated experience working and communicating sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as this role requires a high level of cultural competency.
* demonstrated ability to train and supervise staff; lead and support a motivated team.
* demonstrated ability to successfully engage and work with Communities.
* demonstrated ability to undertake high-level research in an information environment and the ability to use judgement in relation to complex rights issues.
* proven ability to represent an institution in a public capacity and develop strong networks with Communities and other internal and external stakeholders.
* demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
* ability to use initiative to solve problems in a creative manner, prioritise tasks and work to deadlines efficiently and effectively, whilst maintaining excellent attention to detail.
* participate and contribute as a member of the AIATSIS extended leadership team, including supporting the Director and Senior Executive in business planning, regular reporting and policy and procedure development.
* ability to work as part of a team and undertake a wide variety of tasks adapting to priorities in a flexible manner as required.
* model inclusive behaviours and challenges and deal promptly with inappropriate behaviour.
* Information management knowledge and/or experience working with collections will be highly regarded.
