Overview
At CGI, you will play a central role in shaping how complex Defence programmes are communicated, understood, and delivered. As a Strategic Writer, you will craft clear, authoritative, and compelling narratives that support mission-critical decision-making across Australia's Defence community. Your work will help translate strategic intent into impactful content that drives alignment, supports operational outcomes, and strengthens CGI's role in shaping the future of Defence, space, and intelligence capability. You'll collaborate with high-performing teams, contribute creative insight, and take ownership of work that influences senior stakeholders across government and industry.
Due to the secure nature of the programme, you will need to hold NV1 Security Clearance or be eligible to go through this clearance. This is a hybrid position based in Canberra.
Your future duties and responsibilities
In this role, you will develop strategic communication products that support Defence programmes, ensuring complex information is captured clearly, logically, and persuasively. You'll work directly with senior stakeholders to clarify objectives, shape messaging, and deliver written materials that influence decision-making and support project success. You'll collaborate closely with technical and programme teams, contributing creative thinking and maintaining consistent, high-quality documentation across bids, strategies, briefs, and high-level reports.
You will also champion writing standards, improve content processes, and help teams articulate the value, outcomes, and mission impact of CGI's Defence initiatives.
Key responsibilities
Analyse & Interpret: Translate Defence strategy, policy, and technical content into clear written outputs.
Develop & Deliver: Create briefs, strategic papers, executive summaries, and programme documentation.
Advise & Shape: Guide stakeholders on narrative structure, messaging, and content quality.
Refine & Improve: Establish repeatable writing standards and uplift communication materials.
Collaborate & Support: Work with Defence, space, and intelligence teams to ensure consistent high-impact communication.
Required Qualifications To Be Successful In This Role
You should bring strong experience writing for Defence or security environments, with the ability to craft structured, strategic, and persuasive content. A strong understanding of Defence context, stakeholder needs, and government communication expectations is essential.
Essential qualifications
Experience as a strategic, technical, or executive writer within Defence.
Strong ability to translate complex material into clear written products.
Demonstrated experience engaging senior stakeholders.
Excellent attention to detail and structured writing skills.
Ability to work in secure, fast-paced, highly collaborative environments.
NV1 clearance (minimum) or eligibility.
Desirable
Background in Defence industry consulting or government programmes.
Experience writing for space, intelligence, or security domains.
