In this cadet journalist role, you will report real stories for The Citizen and The Yarn. You will sharpen your audio, multimedia and writing craft under the guidance of experienced editors and academics. You will gain newsroom experience, a strong portfolio and industry-relevant skills to propel your journalism career.

What you will deliver

* Report news and feature stories for The Citizen and The Yarn across diverse issues and communities.
* Research, pitch and write well-crafted stories under guidance from editors and producers, meeting professional deadlines and standards.
* Cover events and pursue leads, including occasional out-of-hours activities, to break timely, relevant stories.
* Produce and package multimedia content, including audio, video, images and social storytelling, to deepen audience engagement.
* Support website publishing, editing and collaboration with Master of Journalism student reporters and broader Centre projects.

You may be a great fit if you

* Recently completed (within the last year) or be completing, the final 50 points of a Master of Journalism or International Journalism at Melbourne.
* Have completed required JOUR subjects with H2A or above, including audio journalism and core reporting or international skills.
* Demonstrate strong writing, audio, reporting and multimedia capability, evidenced through coursework outcomes or professional standard publications.
* Understand and uphold ethical journalism requirements, including accuracy, fairness, accountability and rigorous verification practices.
* Bring deep interest in current affairs and confidence generating story ideas for broad, diverse audiences.
* Offer audio or video editing skills and familiarity with WordPress or similar content management systems.

The School of Culture and Communication

The School of Culture and Communication is a thriving teaching and research centre for critical thinking in the humanities, led by world-leading scholars researching literary and cultural studies, art history, cinema and performance, media and communication and Indigenous studies.
