Environmental Chemistry Technical Manager
Proudly Australian owned and operated, Symbio Laboratories ('Symbio') is a leading provider of commercial analytical testing services to the food, agricultural, water, environmental and pharmaceutical industries.
With laboratories in Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Adelaide and Wagga Wagga, Symbio performs important technical analysis on thousands of samples from the food we eat, to the water we drink.
THE ROLE
Symbio is seeking an experienced Environmental Chemistry Technical Manager to provide national technical leadership and support across our Environmental Chemistry operations.
The successful candidate will provide technical expertise, growth and innovation of Symbio's environmental testing capabilities, offering strategic direction and hands-on expertise to a high-performing team across Australia.
As a member of the executive leadership team, this role will support the implementation of company strategy as set by the Board of Directors and will report directly to the National Laboratory Manager and Managing Director.
Key Responsibilities
Provide superior technical and scientific expertise in Environmental Chemistry, ensuring robust, reliable and advanced analytical capability.
Evaluate and recommend new analytical methods to strengthen Symbio's environmental testing portfolio.
Interpret customer requirements, define appropriate testing methods, and support tender applications in collaboration with the Business Development team.
Lead feasibility assessments for new methodologies, including instrument evaluation.
Keep abreast of industry developments, technology and regulatory changes, recommending improvements that enhance capability and efficiency.
Write and update technical SOPs to support and deliver training to BDM team.
Work closely with laboratory managers to optimise workflow, troubleshoot technical issues and ensure high-quality, timely service delivery.
Provide technical support, training and mentorship to staff across all laboratory sites.
Support customer engagement, including onboarding, technical presentations, and resolving escalated technical queries.
Uphold Symbio's WHS, environmental management and quality systems, fostering a culture of safety, efficiency and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Science, Chemistry or a related discipline.
Extensive experience (10+ years) in a senior technical role within Environmental Chemistry.
Strong technical expertise with a range of environmental testing methods, instrumentation and sample matrices.
Demonstrated experience with NATA accreditation (ISO *****), EPA requirements, and laboratory quality management systems.
Strong communication skills with experience writing technical contents to support contract tender.
Ability to work in a fast-paced commercial laboratory environment with a customer-focused approach.
Excellent organisational and time-management skills.
Highly Regarded
Experience in tender applications, client onboarding or technical sales support.
Prior LIMS experience.
Some level of understanding of Australian environmental testing market distribution.
