ABOUT US

The Townsville Flexible School offers a full-time and multiyear secondary education program for young people who have disengaged from mainstream schooling. Young people typically express a broad range of complex education and social needs, and Flexible Schools respond with a variety of flexible and innovative teaching and learning practices, including vocational planning and the development of social connectedness. The Townsville Flexible School was established in 2006 to meet the needs of the local community. In 2019 the Burdekin and Bowen Educational Engagement Programs were established after many years of local consultation. These new programs are campuses of the Townsville Flexible School and run programs for grades 7-10. We are expected to grow from one class group to several in the next few years.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM AND ROLE

The young people who attend our programs have typically experienced significant detachment from education and social inclusion and may be involved with the Department of Youth Justice and/or Children Safety.

The workers of each campus are employed through the Townsville Flexible School and based in the local community. There are strong working relationships between the campuses and travel between them may be required. The daily program with young people will include on-site and off-site activities. Each program will work intensively with a small group of young people to prepare them to access further training, educational and vocational opportunities.

The primary purpose of the Teacher position is:

- Planning, preparation and delivery of effective learning and teaching programs for young people with learning difficulties and learning gaps.
- Contributing to the development and implementation of the school’s objectives and planning.
- Contributing to the establishment and maintenance of a supportive school environment.
- Contributing to the accountability processes including reporting, individual personal learning plans and requirements for NCCD.
- Working in a multi-disciplinary, inter-disciplinary learning team.
- Driving daily school bus runs.
