Government Contracts Attorney / Administrative Law Attorney in Orange, New South Wales
Job Title: Principal Legal Officer, Commercial Law
Responsibilities
The Principal Legal Officer (PLO) in Commercial Law is a subject matter expert responsible for providing high-level legal advice and leadership within the Commercial Law Section.
The role involves supervising and mentoring senior legal officers, taking charge of complex or sensitive legal matters, and ensuring tasks are completed efficiently.
PLOs navigate complex legal issues through effective stakeholder engagement, clear communication, and expert knowledge of commercial law.
They play a significant role in problem-solving and delivering exceptional client service.
The PLO also leads a team, develops staff, sets goals, and manages performance.
Delegating work appropriately and measuring performance are key aspects of this role.
The PLO collaborates with other PLOs in Commercial Law to manage workflow, reporting, and contributes to team and department meetings.
Additionally, the PLO works closely with the Senior Executive Service (SES) to ensure proper briefing and escalation and support for the team.
Qualifications
Education and Experience: Essential qualifications include a degree in law from an Australian university or an overseas degree recognized in Australia for admission to practice.
The candidate must have a Practising Certificate or be eligible to attain one, along with at least three years of post-qualification experience.
Ideal candidates will have specialised knowledge in commercial law advisory work, especially in government procurement and contracting, grants, and property.
High-quality management and leadership skills are required to manage and develop senior legal officers.
Strong technical legal advice writing, second-counselling, and research skills are essential.
Candidates should possess sophisticated relationship management, communication, and negotiation skills to build productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders and provide excellent client service.
The ability to work under pressure, be agile, flexible, and responsive to competing priorities and tight timeframes is crucial.
Salary
The position offers a salary classification of Principal Legal Officer, with a salary range from $157,000 to $177,000, plus superannuation.
Additional Information
Applicants must be Australian Citizens to be eligible for the position.
The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting Level 1 security clearance.
ABF Workers will need to obtain and maintain an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC), and Home Affairs Workers will require an Onboarding Check.
In certain circumstances, the delegate may determine that an ESC is necessary instead of, or in addition to, an Onboarding Check.
