This is a Design Critic role with Mercor based in Sydney, NSW, Australia.
Overview
We are seeking experienced Design Critics to help evaluate, critique, and shape how AI systems interpret and analyze visual design across mediums. This role is ideal for individuals with backgrounds in visual arts, art history, design criticism, visual journalism, or theory-forward design practice who are excited about interrogating aesthetics, composition, and visual reasoning.
You are a good fit if you have:
* 1+ years of professional experience in a visual, critique-based, or design-adjacent field (including design marketing or journalism).
* A bachelor's or master's degree in any design field (e.g., Art History, Visual Arts, Graphic Design, Design Theory, Architecture, Visual Culture Studies, Film & Media Studies, Illustration, Editorial Design, Journalism with a visual/arts focus).
* Experience with LLMs, GenAI prompting, and vibe coding.
* Experience writing or speaking critically about visual work (reviews, essays, critiques, editorial analysis, etc.).
* Based in the U.S., Canada, New Zealand, Europe, Australia, or Brazil (currently).
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills and strong attention to detail.
Role Start Date
The role will begin in early March with applications reviewed on a rolling basis.
Key Responsibilities
* The project is 10-20 hours of work per week with potential for increased hours based on performance.
* Work asynchronously with a team of designers across disciplines.
* Craft, critique, and review experimental design workflows with frontier AI models.
Interview Process
* Complete a short AI interview about your creative process.
* Follow the interview with a short portfolio review and written form.

Contract and Payment Terms
* Engaged as an independent contractor.
* Fully remote role that can be completed on your own schedule.
* Projects can be extended, shortened, or concluded early depending on needs and performance.
* Work will not involve access to confidential or proprietary information from any employer or client.
* Payments are weekly on Stripe or Wise based on services rendered.
* Please note: H1-B or STEM OPT candidates are not supported at this time.
