Your opportunity: Join Urban Utilities as the General Manager – Wastewater and Resource Recovery, a pivotal leadership role based in Brisbane, Queensland.
As a key member of our Operations & Maintenance Group, you will lead a multidisciplinary team of over 100 professionals and operational staff, driving excellence in wastewater treatment and resource recovery.
In this role, you will oversee the day-to-day operations of our Resource Recovery Centres, ensuring we meet our environmental obligations while optimising operational efficiency and maximising the value of recovered resources.
You'll be responsible for ensuring compliance with all legislative and regulatory requirements and for delivering high-quality performance outcomes across the division.
This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of sustainable water management, leveraging in-house capabilities in monitoring, compliance, testing, and reporting.
You'll also provide strategic leadership and expert guidance to our shareholders and the communities we serve.
Key Accountabilities Inspiring Leadership: Motivate and guide a large, diverse team through clear goal setting, performance management, and effective resource allocation.
Strategic Leadership: Develop and execute the strategy for treatment operations and resource recovery, aligning with Urban Utilities' broader vision and long-term goals.
Transformational Change Management – lead the design and delivery of substantial projects within a transformational change program, ensuring integration with other disciplines/functions as a key accountability.
Health, Safety & Environment: Champion a strong HS&E culture, ensuring all activities comply with policies and procedures to protect people, the environment, and the business.
Commercial Oversight: Drive commercial performance across multiple business units, making informed decisions that balance short-term outcomes with long-term value.
Future-Focused Planning: Anticipate industry megatrends and emerging challenges, integrating them into a forward-thinking resource recovery strategy.
Financial Stewardship: Set and manage operational and maintenance budgets, ensuring alignment with strategic priorities and efficient use of resources.
Performance Management: Monitor and report on business performance, hold leaders accountable for results, and take corrective action to ensure objectives are met.

To succeed in this role, you will bring: People Leadership: Experience managing large, diverse teams, with a strong focus on coaching, development, and creating a high-performance culture.
Industry Knowledge: Deep understanding of wastewater treatment, resource recovery, and related regulatory frameworks, standards, and best practices.
Operational Expertise: Demonstrated success managing large-scale, multi-disciplinary operations in a 24/7 environment, ideally within utilities or a similar sector.
Technical Leadership: Extensive experience leading high-performing technical teams, with a focus on solving complex problems and achieving measurable outcomes Stakeholder Engagement: Exceptional relationship-building and influencing skills, with the ability to foster collaboration across internal teams and external partners.
Safety Compliance: Strong knowledge of WHS, Electrical Safety, and Heavy Vehicle legislation in Queensland.
Strategic Thinking: Proven ability to shape and deliver strategies that drive performance across teams and the enterprise.
Commercial Acumen: Strong focus on operational efficiency, cost optimisation, and delivering long-term customer value.
Qualifications: Relevant tertiary qualifications or equivalent experience, and a current C class driver's licence.

This requires that the employee must be available to be on-call and to attend to work matters, both in person and remotely, outside of normal working hours, including evenings, weekends and public holidays, as reasonably required to fulfill the requirements of the position.
The days, times, duration and frequency of on call arrangements may be subject to change, including at short notice, as required by Urban Utilities' operational needs as applying from time to time.
At all times whilst on-call, you must be fit for duty, contactable, and able to respond, including the ability to physically attend if required, to the operational needs of the business within a reasonable timeframe and in a safe manner.
The requirement to undertake 'on call duties' arises from the critical nature of the role including key responsibilities for ensuring the continuity of essential water and wastewater services on a 24 hour 7 days per week basis to customers and the community across Urban Utilities' geographic area in performing functions as a distributor-retailer under the South-East Queensland Water (Distribution and Retail Restructuring Act 2009 (Qld).
The remuneration for the role has been calculated to include compensation for the requirement to remain available to perform work during on call periods and for the performance of work outside the ordinary hours of work as part of on call processes and otherwise.
In some instances, additional compensation and remuneration may apply.
