The Role
The Adult/Aged Persons Psychiatrist plays a key role in providing adult/aged persons mental health clinical services to consumers admitted to the Acute Inpatient Unit (AIU) at Warrnambool Hospital, as well as those receiving community-based mental health support and treatment. The role is predominantly clinical, with additional responsibilities including supervision of junior clinical staff, access to formal teaching through Deakin Medical School/RANZCP, and opportunistic teaching opportunities.
Requirements
Applicants should be registered (or eligible for registration) as a specialist with the Medical Board of Australia and be a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP) or an equivalent overseas-trained specialist who has completed training in the UK, Ireland, Canada, USA (ABPN certified), or New Zealand.
The Medical Board of Australia implemented a new expedited pathway to specialist registration in December 2024, eliminating the need for a specialist assessment with a medical college for accepted qualifications in Psychiatry. Accepted qualifications now include MRCPsych and a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) after 2007. This is an opportune time to apply for this role.
The Hospital
This growing healthcare facility features a new redevelopment providing the Warrnambool community access to world-class healthcare close to home. The new multi-level building will include a larger emergency department, more operating theatres, 22 additional inpatient beds, and upgraded dialysis services. A new paediatric unit will also offer specialized care for children and young people, reflecting the region's increasing population.
As the largest employer in the region with over 1350 employees, the hospital is the major specialist referral center for the Barwon South West sub-region, offering a comprehensive range of acute, sub-acute, specialist, community, mental health, and aged services.
The Location
Situated on the Great Ocean Road, Warrnambool is surrounded by lush rural landscapes and breathtaking ocean views. It boasts spectacular coastlines, beaches, parks, gardens, seaside walking and biking trails, whale watching, shipwreck history, excellent cuisine, sports, and a vibrant city center, offering something for everyone.
