Medical Registrar / Senior Medical Registrar – Respiratory Medicine Advanced Trainee | Alice Springs

Date published: May 12, 2026, 08:17 AM

Location: Alice Springs Hospital

Looking for a clinically rich, professionally rewarding, and truly unique training experience? Alice Springs Hospital (ASH) is seeking applications for a Respiratory Medicine Advanced Trainee (6 month Core) position starting August 2026.

ASH has RACP provisional accreditation for Core Respiratory Medicine Advanced Training, offering a structured, well-supervised program. As the regional referral centre for Central Australia, ASH services a vast and diverse population across more than one million square kilometres.

Approximately 75–85% of patients identify as Aboriginal, providing trainees with valuable experience managing complex respiratory diseases—such as bronchiectasis, COPD, tuberculosis, and interstitial lung disease—within a cross-cultural context. This role offers high procedural exposure, including bronchoscopy, pleural ultrasound, thoracocentesis, and intercostal catheter insertion, alongside strong training in respiratory physiology and interpretation of advanced lung function tests. Trainees also gain experience in sleep and ventilation medicine, including NIV/CPAP management.

You'll benefit from close supervision by experienced physicians, protected weekly teaching, and access to educational and research opportunities. Collaboration with tertiary centres and outreach work to remote communities further enhance the training experience. Alice Springs offers a unique outback lifestyle, with a welcoming community, stunning landscapes, and easy access to outdoor activities.

Responsibilities
* Provide strong leadership and manage all aspects of the day-to-day activities of the Department of Medicine, focusing on patient safety and quality of services.
* Provide high quality day to day care for inpatient and outpatient clinical services in the department. Supervise the day-to-day activities of interns and residents and ensure the overall quality of clinical care and the medical record.
* Participate in the on-call roster as required to ensure the proper functioning of the hospital.
Qualifications
* Registration (or eligibility) with AHPRA as a Medical Practitioner.
* Completion of RACP Basic Physician Training and the Divisional Clinical Examination (or equivalent).
* Commitment to culturally safe and patient-centred care.
* Eligibility for credentialing, including Criminal History Check and immunisation compliance.

We acknowledge and pay respect to the Traditional Custodians and Elders — past, present and emerging — of the lands and waters on which RACP members and staff live, learn and work. RACP acknowledges Māori as tangata whenua and Te Tiriti o Waitangi partners in Aotearoa New Zealand.
