Primary objective
Lead two projects that work with our partners to deliver soil and land resource information for (i) land type-based pastoral
carrying capacities and (ii) an agricultural soil and land management manual for the Northern Territory (NT).
Context statement
Under the National Soil Action Plan 2023-2028 the Australian Government is partnering with the NT to support improved
soil and land management through the development of land type-based pastoral carrying capacities and an agricultural soil
and land management guide. The department is collaborating with its industry partners to develop both projects.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Collaborate with project steering committees composed of pastoral scientists, vegetation ecologists, agronomists and
industry representatives.
2. Lead a review of available soil and land resource mapping across the Victoria River District and Alice Springs pastoral
regions and agricultural precincts in the NT.
3. Plan, design and undertake field operations to collect soil and land resource data, ensuring adherence to NT and
Australian guidelines.
4. Synthesise, interpret and extrapolate soil landscape data and mapping and compile into technical publications and
extension material aimed at the pastoral and agricultural sectors.
5. Supervise project team staff.
6. Work with senior management to deliver all projects in a timely manner.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. A relevant scientific degree qualification from a recognised university or tertiary institution.

assessment standards, field techniques and soil classification systems.
3. Demonstrated experience collating and interpreting soil and land resource related information and mapping in a GIS.
4. Ability to work effectively with landholders and partners in a project team.
5. An ability to undertake remote area field investigations in a small survey team.
6. Current manual NT Drivers Licence or equivalent including an ability to operate a four wheel drive in off-road conditions.
Desirable
1. Experience delivering soil and land management information to the agricultural or pastoral sectors.
