Job Description

The Housing/Shelter Support Worker participates in identifying clients' problems, needs, and risks. They plan and conduct individual counselling sessions using basic one-on-one counselling techniques. The worker provides specific life skills building in problem areas and engages in services from intake procedures and programs to help residents/shelter users succeed in their goals.

The worker advocates for residents, resolves difficult issues, responds to medical emergencies, including overdoses, and maintains a safe environment for marginalized populations.

* Assist with resident support plan development and delivery of services in collaboration with Team Lead/Site Supervisor and support team.
* Develop rapport and professional relationships with residents.
* Perform wellness checks.
* Participate in shelter set-up and clean up.
* Distribute supplies and assist with activities such as room cleans and vacant room clean outs.
* Assist with applications and referrals.
* Develop short-term intervention plans and evaluate their effectiveness.
* Collaborate with the Site Supervisor and outside agencies to address client problems and move towards objectives.
* Gather information through interviewing, observing behavior, and reviewing inventories, checklists, and questionnaires.
* Plan and conduct individual counselling sessions using active listening and conflict resolution techniques.
* Maintain active files for assigned residents, including electronic log notes and statistics.


Required Skills and Qualifications

Basic computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite are required. Training in non-violent crisis intervention techniques and harm reduction approach is also necessary. Knowledge of community resources and ability to work independently and show initiative are highly valued.

The candidate should have strong problem-solving, decision-making, communication, and collaboration skills. Ability to lift up to 30 lbs and navigate stairs is also required.


Benefits

Full-time position with three 12-hour shifts (36 hours/week). Compensation: $31.56 to $33.49 per hour. Vacation accrues at a rate of 6% or in accordance with length of service. Comprehensive benefits plan, including health and dental coverage, after completion of probationary period.
