Position: Senior Principal / Assessment & Approval Service Lead

JBS&G is one of Australia's leading environmental consulting firms, providing contaminated land building assessments, cleanup and monitoring services together with experienced approvals experts who specialise in mining and infrastructure projects.

About the role

As a Senior Principal and Service Lead (QLD) – Assessments and Approvals, you will play a pivotal leadership role in driving the strategic growth and operational excellence of the QLD Assessments and Approvals team. Your primary responsibility will be to establish, develop, and lead a high-performing team that delivers exceptional consultancy services to JBS&G clients (including those of its brands, such as Consentium).

You will represent JBS&G at a high level, overseeing business activities that enhance company reputation, profitability, and market presence. This includes cultivating strong client relationships, identifying and pursuing growth opportunities, and leading initiatives that align with the company's strategic objectives. Working closely with the State Manager and National Leadership Team, you will contribute to the overall direction, development, and success of the business in QLD and beyond.

Key responsibilities

Leadership & Strategy

Contribute to and/or lead the implementation of relevant components of the company's 5 year Strategic Plan and QLD Annual Tactical Plan in collaboration with the QLD State Manager and interstate peers.
Deliver high-quality, professional consultancy services across areas of expertise, in particular A&A, to clients of JBS&G.
Recruit outstanding A&A professionals in order to grow the service offering in QLD.
Work collaboratively with your peers who are leading consultancy services outside of your direct areas of expertise, leveraging internal and external resources effectively.
Develop strong relationships with clients, government agencies and internal stakeholders with the aim of being able to respond quickly to meet client needs.
Serve as the Project Director/Manager for key projects, ensuring successful achievement of client and JBS&G objectives.
Maintain personal and team billability targets (utilisation) as agreed.
Monitor and advise on changing market trends and conditions as they affect the company and to assist the State Manager in modifying the QLD Tactical Plan to capitalise on any changing circumstances.

Project Management

Direct projects to ensure:
Target margins are met or exceeded;
Projects are delivered to an appropriate standard;
Opportunities for additional services are identified;
Clients expectations are met or exceeded;
JBS&G risks are managed across the business, both locally and as a whole.

Complete timesheets on a weekly basis.

People & Culture

Lead by example and uphold company care and trust policies, including fair work, diversity and inclusion practices.
Work with peers and colleagues to recruit and retain outstanding A&A professionals as the service in QLD and nationally grows.
Identify opportunities for personal and team professional development and foster a positive work environment.
Maintain awareness of environmental, social and governance ethics pertinent to the role, seeking guidance from colleagues and peers as necessary.
Actively participate in and foster a 'better than compliance' culture in line with the JBS&G IMS and Workplace Health and Safety policies, procedures, systems and regulatory environment.
Be responsible for enforcing JBS&G safety and quality standards on any subcontractors working under JBS&G supervision.
Where applicable, ensure that all JBS&G staff are abiding by JBS&G safety and quality standards and that any observations or events are reported promptly.

Sustainable Growth & Performance

Actively promote JBS&G's consultancy services to existing and potential clients, identifying new opportunities for growth.
Appropriately represent the company in its relationships with major clients, government bodies, and professional organisations.
Drive growth in the delivery of quality services and lead initiatives to expand JBS&G's market presence in QLD, with a focus on A&A.
Assist interstate colleagues to grow the national A&A service.
Ensure financial performance of the QLD A&A service aligns with JBS&G targets and goals for revenue and margins.
Lead, manage and oversee QLD A&A project budgets and variations, ensuring they are effectively tracked, communicated to project teams, and updated in systems (e.g., Workbench).
Authority to give approval to proposals / purchase orders, up to a maximum of $100,000. Proposals for a larger amount must be reviewed by the QLD State Manager or General Manager of Strategic Growth.
Provide technical peer review and signoff on A&A reports, proposals, and tenders as required.

Innovation Excellence

Use innovative approaches to win work, increase margins and achieve better outcomes for JBS&G and our clients on every single engagement.
Encourage a culture of innovation within your direct team and across the company more broadly.
Have a strong understanding of the Federal and State environmental legislation as it relates to project approvals, always with the aim of innovating throughout the approval process.
Identify and apply appropriate management tools for improved environmental approval project outcomes.
Train and mentor junior staff on environmental compliance and the practical application of relevant legislation with a focus on 'How can we do better?'.

Social & Environmental Contribution

Identify new opportunities to help JBS&G contribute to the communities in which we operate.
Work with existing clients to identify opportunities where they can do better and assist where sensible to implement these ideas.
Encourage a culture of environmental and social stewardship within the QLD A&A Team and beyond.
Actively contribute to the JBS&G RAP as appropriate.

Skills & Experience

20+ years' experience in environmental approvals, impact assessments and/or management in consulting, industry or government.
A track record in recruiting, growing and retaining a team of high quality professionals.
Extensive experience navigating project approval pathways under relevant environmental legislation and regulatory frameworks.
Proven ability to synthesise technical information into clear, concise summaries tailored to the needs of clients, government agencies, and the public.
Strong commercial acumen, with a track record in consulting, project management, and business development.
A well connected network of Queensland regulators, clients, technical consultants
Lead multidisciplinary project teams to deliver high-quality outputs for clients, government regulators and the public.
Develop and manage scopes for technical environmental studies, engaging with sub-consultants as required.
Provide clear, innovative solutions to clients, addressing complex assessment and approval challenges.
Expertise in consulting, with strong business development, commercial and financial management skills.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, enabling clear and effective stakeholder engagement.

Qualifications

A relevant degree in science, environmental management, law, engineering or similar, or equivalent experience.
