We are seeking an experienced Maintenance Supervisor to lead the afternoon shift maintenance team at a scrap metal processing facility. Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, you will oversee the maintenance, reliability, and safe operation of critical plant equipment, including the scrap shredder and scrap shear.
This role is responsible for supervising a team of 13 tradespeople and ensuring timely response to breakdowns, effective preventive maintenance, and strict adherence to safety standards. You will play a key role in minimising downtime, supporting production targets, and driving continuous improvement across maintenance operations.

Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership & Supervision
* Lead, supervise, and support a team of 13 maintenance personnel, including fitters, welders, and electricians
* Allocate shifts, assign daily tasks, and ensure adequate resourcing to meet operational demands
* Provide coaching, training, and performance feedback to develop team capability
Maintenance & Operations
* Respond promptly to breakdowns on scrap shredders, shears, conveyors, and related equipment
* Coordinate and prioritise repairs to minimise production downtime
* Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic faults on heavy industrial machinery
* Ensure timely completion of work orders, preventive maintenance, and corrective repairs
Contractor & Resource Management
* Manage external contractors, ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and project timelines
* Oversee tools, spare parts, and consumables inventory while controlling maintenance costs
* Utilise maintenance management systems (e.g. MEX) to track work and performance
Safety, Compliance & Continuous Improvement
* Enforce all safety documentation requirements, including permits, risk assessments, and inspections
* Ensure strict adherence to health, safety, and environmental regulations
* Promote a strong safety-first culture in a high-risk industrial environment
* Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance equipment reliability and team efficiency
* Collaborate with other shifts and departments to support overall site performance
About You
Qualifications & Experience
* Minimum 3-5 years' experience in a maintenance supervisory role
* Background in scrap metal recycling, heavy manufacturing, or similar industrial environments
* Hands-on experience with scrap processing equipment such as shredders, shears, conveyors, and material handlers
* Demonstrated leadership experience managing teams of 10+ employees (union or non-union environments)
* Relevant trade qualification (Mechanical, Electrical, or similar)
Skills & Capabilities
* Strong understanding of safety systems in high-risk environments (lockout/tagout, confined spaces, heavy machinery)
* Proven ability to diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues
* Experience using maintenance management systems (MEX or similar)
* Strong organisational and decision-making skills under pressure
* Ability to work the afternoon shift (12:00 PM - 8:00 PM) with flexibility for overtime or emergency callouts
