Assistant Director, Environment Policy and Standards

Salary range $124,755- $145,496 + 15.4% super

Canberra, Hobart and Coffs Harbour preferred; other AMSA locations will be considered.

AMSA Level 6, Ongoing

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Assistant Director, Environment Policy and Standards, will be responsible for formulating, examining and evaluating regulations and policy to make recommendations on key cross-cutting policy issues related to international maritime pollution prevention conventions and their implementation in Australia. The Assistant Director will use their strong communication skills within AMSA and externally, including internationally, to influence and progress policy in Australia's national interest.

You will be responsible for:

* Research and analyse environmental issues, trends and regulatory responses, both in Australia and internationally to inform the development of Australia's policy and inform international and domestic engagement.
* Lead the development of Australia's position and prepare briefing on key issues for International Maritime Organization (IMO) meetings including Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) and Pollution Prevention and Response Sub-Committee (PPR).
* Contribute to the analysis and formulation of policy related to maritime environment protection issues and the preparation of documentation relating to the introduction of new and amending legislation and marine orders.
* Lead consultation with relevant stakeholders, including preparing communication materials and arranging and participating in engagement internally and externally as necessary.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

To be successful in this position, you will have the following skills and experience:

* Experience developing and/or administering policy, regulation and/or legislation.
* Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment and deliver results to a high standard.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills and a demonstrated ability to engage effectively with stakeholders.
* Experience undertaking research and analysis and preparing briefings on complex issues including for high level meetings.
* Good judgement and demonstrated ability to provide quality advice and resolve complex issues.

The following is also considered desirable:

* Relevant tertiary qualifications, such as environmental or maritime law, international relations, or environmental science.
* Understanding of international conventions, legislation and/or policies, particularly for, but not limited to, environment protection
