These roles are embedded within the Geospatial Collection Systems (GCS) Directorate — a part of the Joint Geospatial Program, which delivers some of the nation's most essential spatial intelligence capabilities.You'll work at the cutting edge of GEOINT capability development, delivering projects that support the Joint Force, National Intelligence Community, and Whole of Government partners.This is not just another PM gig.
You will be entrusted with responsibility, autonomy, and the opportunity to lead delivery of classified projects that protect and enable Australian national security interests.Background: The Directorate & MissionThe GCS Directorate is accountable for planning and managing investment in geospatial technologies, tools, systems, and data that enable Australian Defence Forces and Intelligence operations.Key programs include:Hydrographic Information Partnership Program (HIPP) – modernising how Defence captures, shares, and uses marine and coastal intelligence.DEF 799 Projects – cutting-edge initiatives delivering strategic GEOINT capabilities through space, AI, automation, and data fusion.Cross-agency engagements – collaborating with industry, academia, and Government to co-develop spatial technology and capability.In this role, you'll be part of a trusted and skilled delivery team providing technical project management, planning, delivery oversight, stakeholder engagement, and reporting across these mission-aligned initiatives.Role OverviewRole Title: Technical Project Manager (x3)SFIA Level 6 – Senior leadership, autonomy, strategic planningSFIA Level 5 – Mid-senior expertise, operational ownership, team coordinationSecurity Clearance Required:Must hold a current Positive Vetting (PV) security clearanceNV2 with ability to upgrade to PV may be considered in exceptional casesWork Location:Onsite at Russell Offices and/or Brindabella Park, CanberraKey ResponsibilitiesAs a Technical Project Manager, you will be responsible for delivering and assuring complex Defence GEOINT projects from end-to-end, including:Strategic Project LeadershipLead the delivery of high-impact technical projects aligned with Defence's strategic objectivesDefine, document, and execute work plans, schedules, and performance metricsIdentify risks and develop mitigation strategies in a complex stakeholder environmentTechnical Delivery ExcellenceManage scope, timelines, and quality across highly classified systemsInterface with architects, engineers, and SMEs to ensure project outcomes align with Defence's ICT architecture and GEOINT objectivesEnsure compatibility with Commonwealth systems, processes, and digital platformsStakeholder Engagement & CommunicationCommunicate with confidence across DIG, Defence, NIC, industry, and academiaInfluence key stakeholders to align on project strategy and executionProvide briefings, documentation, and submissions for senior executives and committeesPerformance, Governance & ReportingTrack project activities against schedule and budgetPrepare reports, performance reviews, and lessons learned documentationSupport audit, assurance, and compliance activities with accuracy and responsivenessInnovation & Continuous ImprovementDevelop and apply innovative delivery approaches using AI, space, and data capabilitiesTranslate science and technology research into real-world Defence outcomesChampion collaboration with academia and industry to evolve GEOINT capabilityYour BackgroundWe're looking for seasoned professionals who bring depth of experience, curiosity, and a commitment to excellence.Essential Requirements:Strong experience leading complex technical projects, preferably in Defence or National Security environmentsHold a Project Management qualification (e.g., PRINCE2, PMP, AgilePM)Experience working within classified or high-assurance environmentsExceptional written and verbal communication skillsDeep understanding of ICT environments, systems integration, and project assuranceDemonstrated ability to manage stakeholder relationships across multiple agencies and levelsCommitment to secure, ethical, and performance-based deliveryDesirable Skills:Prior experience with GEOINT, ISR, mission systems, or related Defence programsFamiliarity with secure networks (DPN, DSN, TS)Experience delivering projects involving space technologies, data fusion, or AI-enabled analyticsBackground in working with academic partners or Defence innovation initiativesCareer Pathways & GrowthAt Azooa, we don't just fill roles — we build careers.
