The Opportunity:

The Department is seeking to establish a pool of experienced and talented professionals to fill both immediate and future vacancies for Senior Environmental Officers and Managers (Specified Calling Level 3 and 4) within our Environmental Regulation division. Whether you come from a career in mining, oil and gas, manufacturing, energy, agriculture, primary production, waste management, environmental consulting or government, your skills and knowledge can transfer into a rewarding role with DWER.

We currently have Fixed-Term opportunities available until June 2027 within our new Heavy Industries branch, with the potential for extension or permanency. These include roles for one (1) Senior Environmental Officer and one (1) Manager. In addition we have two (2) permanent Senior Environmental Officer vacancies to fill immediately within our Resource Industries branch.

The newly established Heavy Industries branch leads the regulation of major manufacturing, energy, refining, bulk material loading and other industry projects having State Significant project status or otherwise a priority, significant or technically complex project. As part of a team dedicated to excellence in environmental regulation, you will play a key role in one of DWER’s most dynamic and high-impact areas, helping to shape sustainable outcomes for some of the State’s most significant development projects.

The Resource Industries branch oversees the regulation of the State’s raw material processing and mining operations, including mineral sands extraction and associated activities such as wastewater treatment, power generation, and waste management. As a member of the team you have the opportunity to collaborate with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders across industry, government and the community.

This pool will also be used to fill fixed term contract and permanent vacancies arising within other Environmental Regulation division branches including Waste Industries and Process Industries. We are looking for experienced environmental professionals who would embrace the opportunity to be part of a motivated team responsible for regulation of industrial emissions and discharges from prescribed premises under Part V of the Environmental Protection Act 1986 through a works approval and licensing process.

Senior Environmental Officer (SCL3)

As a Senior Environmental Officer within the Environmental Regulation division, you will:

- Independently assess and manage complex applications for works approvals and licences under Part V of the Environmental Protection Act 1986 — and make decisions under delegated authority.
- Lead the resolution of complex, contentious and/or environmentally sensitive issues.
- Provide expert advice to both internal teams and external stakeholders, blending regulatory insight with scientific expertise.
- Mentor and support fellow environmental officers, helping build technical capability across the team.
- Improve how we regulate by supporting the development of clear policies, practical guidance, and efficient processes that strengthen our regulatory delivery and environmental outcomes.

This role is ideal for experienced environmental professionals with strong scientific and regulatory expertise, excellent communication skills, and a collaborative mindset.

Manager (SCL4)

As a Manager within the Environmental Regulation division you will:

- Lead with purpose — manage a diverse, talented team regulating industrial emissions and discharges, while guiding them through complex, environmental challenges.
- Own the approvals process — oversee assessments of works approval and licence applications under Part V of the Environmental Protection Act 1986, ensuring decisions are sound, enforceable, and made with confidence under delegated authority.
- Drive strategic change — bring your voice to the table by shaping policy, refining processes, and championing regulatory reform through hands-on involvement in improvement initiatives.
- Inspire high performance — cultivate a team culture that’s motivated, innovative, and collaborative — where people thrive, ideas flow, and impact is real.

This leadership role suits experienced environmental professionals with a strong background in environmental assessment and regulation, team leadership and management, and collaborative stakeholder engagement and relationship building.

As a department we recognise that flexible working arrangements support effective work-life balance, empowers our people and increases team productivity. We are committed to creating an equitable and diverse workforce that promotes an inclusive and supportive workplace environment.
