About This Opportunity
The position forms part of the Net Zero Australia research project, with a desktop modelling focus on:
* decarbonisation pathways for Heavy Industry,
* production pathways for Sustainable Fuels,
* evaluation Carbon, Capture and Storage alongside Direct Air Capture, and
* pathways for clean exports as a way to help decarbonise our trading partners.
You will be involved with detailed technical modelling and evaluation of existing and emerging decarbonisation pathways for mining, heavy industry and liquid fuels. This is an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution the broader industry and resource sector decarbonisation pathways through rigorous, integrated modelling and thereby highlight the importance of industry decarbonisation as part of Australia’s Net Zero ambitions and therefore should inform the sequence actions for the most significant decarbonisation at the lowest cost.
This project will be conducted within the wider Net Zero Australia project, a collaboration between The University of Queensland, The University of Melbourne and Princeton University.
Key responsibilities will include:
* Research: Lead and contribute to a nationally impactful research program in Net Zero Transitions by producing high-quality research outputs, publishing in reputable journals and conferences and taking a lead role in some publications. Actively seek and manage competitive research funding, often collaborating with experienced researcher and support the development of joint projects. Contribute to knowledge transfer and the commercialisation of research outcomes, while applying and promoting best practice research methodologies.
* Teaching: Where undergraduate and postgraduate teaching is undertaken achieve teaching quality as indicated by approved surveys and outcomes for students and improve or innovate where appropriate in response to feedback.
* Supervision and Researcher Development: Demonstrate a proven ability to supervise Undergraduate, Masters, or Higher Degree by Research students in engineering or energy disciplines, while actively facilitating engagement opportunities for research students. Effectively manage staff in line with University policies, addressing conflict and grievances promptly and professionally throughout the employee lifecycle.
* Citizenship and Service: Develop partnerships, demonstrate leadership through mentoring, engage in internal service roles and committees, perform administrative functions, provide support to colleagues, and uphold university values.

About You
* Completion of a PhD in the discipline area (e.g. Chemical or Mechanical or Energy Engineering).
* A growing profile in research in the discipline area (examples include: net zero transitions for heavy industry, industry decarbonisation, electrification of process heat, low carbon liquid fuels, direct-air capture).
* Experience with integrated, multi-sector energy models is highly desired.
* Strong analytical and writing skills, with a track record of peer-reviewed publications or equivalent outputs.
* Evidence of successfully seeking, obtaining and managing research funding.
* Knowledge of the Australian energy and industry landscape.
* Capacity to engage with diverse stakeholders (e.g. government, industry, Indigenous organisations, community groups).
* Strong project coordination and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary (and global) team.
The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including: right to work in Australia, criminal check, education check, mandatory immunisations, etc.
