About the role
The Legal Counsel role plays a critical part in supporting Coles' legal and compliance objectives. This position provides expert legal advice on competition and consumer law, manages regulatory notifications, and assists with dispute resolution to ensure compliance and mitigate risk across the business.
Regulatory Compliance & Notifications
* Support the Senior Legal Counsel and Head of Legal – Regulatory & Disputes in administering ACCC merger notifications annually
* Independently manage notifications for simpler sites and assist with complex cases
* Support merger clearance processes for business acquisitions requiring ACCC notification
Legal Advisory & Support
* Provide competition and consumer law advice to the merchandise legal team and other stakeholders
* Upskill the commercial legal team on common competition law issues and deliver timely, practical legal guidance
* Assist with regulatory investigations, including ACCC inquiries and compliance queries from other regulators (e.g., liquor licensing authorities, municipal councils)
* Support senior lawyers on major litigation and independently advise on smaller commercial disputes, such as supplier issues
About you and your skills
Our ideal candidate will bring proven experience from an in-house legal team, the ACCC, or mid-to-top-tier law firm, with strong exposure to corporate and commercial matters. Expertise in competition law, including engagement with the ACCC, as well as experience in property or property legal teams, will be highly regarded. You will demonstrate strategic thinking and the ability to provide clear direction on complex, cross-functional issues, while driving process improvements and implementing efficient legal service delivery practices.
You will also ideally have:
* Current legal practising certificate
* Strong legal acumen with the ability to handle complex arrangements and deliver commercially focused advice
* In-depth understanding of commercial and regulatory legal issues
* Demonstrated experience in advising on competition and consumer law risks and escalating systemic risks appropriately
* Ability to respond promptly, practically, and strategically to material legal issues
* Capability to drive continuous improvement and act as a change agent
* Presence and influence across a diverse stakeholder group
