Company Description
InCanopy is an environmental data company building large-scale analytics on urban tree canopy.
Through our platform, Tree Ledger, we analyse millions of trees using aerial imagery to track canopy change across cities. Our work supports councils and planners with accurate, repeatable insights into how urban environments are evolving.
Role Description
We’re looking for a junior or graduate Data Scientist to join us on a flexible, month-by-month contract, with strong potential for ongoing work.
This role is suited to someone early in their career who wants to work with large-scale geospatial datasets and contribute to real-world environmental analysis at city scale.
You’ll work on analysing urban tree canopy across suburbs, road networks, waterways, and broader landscapes. The focus is on turning spatial data into clear insights — not just running analysis, but explaining what it means.
You’ll also explore how canopy interacts with other datasets (e.g. land use, infrastructure, environmental or economic indicators), helping build a deeper picture of urban systems.
Tasks
* Analyse large geospatial datasets.
* Work with canopy and vegetation data across multiple years
* Produce clear visualisations (maps, charts, reports)
* Translate complex spatial outputs into simple, compelling narratives
* Support ongoing data pipelines and reporting workflows
We're looking for
* Graduate or junior experience in data science, GIS, environmental science, or similar
* Strong Python skills (pandas, geopandas, etc.)
* Comfortable working in Linux environments
* Confidence with scripting (Bash or similar) to run and manage data workflows
* Strong data visualisation skills (maps + charts)
* Ability to communicate insights clearly
Nice to have
* Experience with large geospatial datasets or aerial imagery
* Familiarity with QGIS, GDAL
* Exposure to environmental or urban data
* Interest in cities, infrastructure, or climate-related work
