**About the role**
- We are seeking a Technical Assistant who is highly motivated to become part of a passionate and engaged team. The Technical Assistant will ensure that specimens are processed efficiently, and results are reported accurately to the Health Services and doctors serviced by the laboratory.
- The Technical Assistant will also perform scientific duties and develop skills within the scope of the laboratory or department to achieve organisational goals and objectives.
- This is a great opportunity to work in a newly created laboratory on a full time or part time basis
- Opportunities available at our Burnie Lab Launceston or Mersey Lab in Hobart.
- Your key responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following:
- Perform routine diagnostic tests, prepare routine tissue preparation and services using various techniques under scientific supervision
- Perform all quality control testing necessary for each of the assays performed, and review, document and act on the results according to departmental policy
- Perform regular maintenance and basic troubleshooting on automated and manual instrumentation and equipment, ensuring optimal performance. Complete all relevant documentation associated with these tasks including reporting and/or escalate to senior staff
- Participate in regular training for relevant techniques and instrument operation, maintain current scientific knowledge via journal reviews and attendance at both internal and external continuing education activities and engage in ongoing departmental competency programs
- Collaborate with colleagues and the Lab Manager/Supervisor to identify areas for improvement and implement workflow enhancements for continuous laboratory improvement.
- Participate and perform testing for internal and external quality assurance programs.
- As directed, perform specimen reception duties, unpack and maintain stock inventory to ensure continuity of testing and service provisions.
- Documents any incidents or complaints on Q-pulse and escalates to senior staff as appropriate
- Where directed, and as appropriate with knowledge and experience, accept results in middleware and/or report negative results with scientific supervision
**About you**
- To be considered for this position, you will need to have a great blend of skills, including:
- Certificate or Associate Diploma of Applied Science (Medical Laboratory) or equivalent
- Knowledge of quality assurance systems.
- Strong time management, interpersonal, communication and organisational skills
- The ability to cope and thrive in a busy environment
- Self-initiative and problem-solving capabilities
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
