The Roles
The Office of National Intelligence (ONI) is seeking skilled and experienced professionals to contribute to ensuring strategic engagement and alignment across the National Intelligence Community's (NIC) Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data strategic, policy and governance environments.
Working in ONI's Data Strategy team is a great opportunity to contribute to the NIC's future capability. You will also have the opportunity to strengthen strategic thinking and build new professional networks within the NIC. This position will provide a strong sense of how the NIC works together to support Australia's national security objectives and achieve shared outcomes.
The Team
The Digital and Data Division within the Office of the National Intelligence (ONI) is dynamic and growing. Data is at the core of our work; and we are dedicated to innovation and transformation.
We are seeking to fill multiple roles within the Data Branch, working under the leadership of the Chief Data Officer, these roles sit within the Data Strategy team. The team drives innovation by leveraging data and technology to gain advantage through analysis and collaborative, interoperable community environments.
The Data Strategy team collaborates with the NIC to provide coordinated advice on data and AI-related Australian Government policies and frameworks, with a focus on the safe, ethical, and responsible use of AI.
The team works in a dynamic environment, engaging with stakeholders across the NIC and with the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, Department of Finance, Digital Transformation Agency and Department of Industry, Science and Resources, within the national security and intelligence context.
Who are we looking for?

Our EL1 positions (Assistant Director) require an understanding of policy and governance progression, and experience and/or an interest in data and AI management along with the ability to work under broad direction to initiate and execute work plans to deliver objectives. These roles require the ability to facilitate collaboration between multiple technical and non-technical stakeholders, and lead engagement across stakeholders. It is expected you will have some responsibility in leading and managing a small team.
Our APS6 positions (Senior Officer) require an understanding of policy and governance development, along with exposure to data and AI management or a curiosity to develop this knowledge to help drive impactful outcomes. These roles influence and contribute to the success of projects and team objectives, supporting senior officers in analysing and providing recommendations. They require the ability to work with autonomy and apply judgement in identifying and responding to issues and assignments relating to each deliverable/task assigned.
Key Attributes
Our ideal candidate would have:
* experience in the development, drafting, and progression of policies and frameworks;
* an understanding or interest in developing an insight into AI and/or data governance and management requirements;
* strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with keen attention to detail, and excellent written and verbal communication skills;
* experience in establishing and maintaining effective working and collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders; and
* ability to establish priorities, monitor progress, and work to deliver required outcomes within set timeframes.
