Primary objective
Under the direction of the Business Manager and Principal, to maintain the school premises, its buildings and property in a
functional, neat and orderly condition and provide support for staff and students according to school policy and procedures
and Health and Safety regulations.
Context statement
Sanderson Middle School is a government school which has an enrolment of 350 students with an Indigenous cohort of
approximately 50%. Staff are collaborative and supportive of the local community, working in partnership with parents and
other community organisations. The school enrols Years 7, 8 and 9 students from the suburbs of Anula, Karama, Malak,
Northlake's and Wulagi, but many students (including Intensive English students) come from further afield .
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Regularly inspect and undertake general repairs and maintenance to school buildings and grounds that require technical,
general handyman or tradesman skills as required. Carry out a range of tasks to make sure the school premises are in a
neat and orderly condition.
2. Action potential health and safety risks by immediately reporting or exercising judgement in sorting out the problem.
3. Oversee the satisfactory completion of repairs referred to by outside contractors.
4. Maintain toilets and wet areas in a clean and hygienic state during school hours.
5. Inspect and unlock the school premises each morning before start time. Report immediately any unusual activity e.g.,
vandalism, break in etc.
6. Carry out minor purchasing, collection of stores, mail and provide a courier service as required. Receive, unpack and
distribute stores as directed and assist with moving furniture and fittings as required.
7. Assist with the preparation of school excursions, camps, sports days and other special events as required.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
2. Ability to determine priorities, meet deadlines, use initiative and work independently.
3. Sound communication and interpersonal skills when dealing with the public, contractors, school staff and students.
4. Building and general handyman experience with an ability to produce a high standard of finish.
5. Demonstrated experience in gardens/grounds maintenance.
6. Knowledge and the ability to work within Occupational Health and Safety practices.
7. Current Northern Territory driver's licence and a current Working with Children Clearance Notice (OCHRE Card).
