The Role

Reporting to the Chief Counsel/First Assistant Secretary, Workplace Relations Legal Division, the Senior Executive Lawyer is responsible for leading a branch of lawyers to develop legislation and provide expert legal advice on cutting edge workplace relations issues and policy.

You will be an outstanding leader with exceptional stakeholder management, communication and legal skills with demonstrated experience in leading complex legislative programs or deep knowledge of the workplace relations framework.

You will work with the Chief Counsel and other Senior Executive Lawyers to contribute to the strategic leadership of the division to manage a busy legal practice and work collaboratively with colleagues in policy and legal branches to deliver legal policy objectives.

You will demonstrate a collaborative working style with a strong focus on building effective relationships both within the department and externally, as well as the capability to develop and strengthen teams within in your branch.

Duties And Responsibilities

The Senior Executive Lawyer's duties and responsibilities will include:
* leading and being accountable for delivering the government's workplace relations legislative agenda as it relates to your branch
* leading the provision of clear, accurate, timely and strategic written and oral advice on complex legal matters in accordance with legal professional obligations
* providing professional supervision, management and leadership of legal teams providing practical, timely and client-focused legal advice to stakeholders, and building capability of those teams
* collaborating across legal and policy divisions both internally and externally on legal policy issues
* building and sustaining productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure cooperative, solution-focused legal service delivery within constrained timeframes
* representing the department at Senate Estimates hearings, parliamentary inquiries and other external-facing meetings and events
* developing the strategic direction for the branch to support higher level agency objectives
* actively contributing to the strategic leadership of the Division, fostering positive change and improved work practices, and
* supporting legal teams to provide expert legal advice and briefings to stakeholders.

You Must Also Be Able To Demonstrate
* significant technical expertise in the delivery of complex legal services and the development of complex legislation
* exceptional judgment, problem solving skills and efficiency
* high standards of integrity and professionalism
* a strong track record of achieving outcomes in line with corporate goals, influencing processes and building staff capability, and
* strong leadership skills and experience managing legal branches and/or policy branches.

Qualifications And Education
* Must have tertiary qualifications in law
* Must be admitted as a practitioner, however described, of the High Court or the Supreme Court of an Australian State or Territory
* Must hold a practising certificate or be eligible to hold a practising certificate
* Must have a high degree of expertise, and extensive experience, in legal policy and/or legal advice.
