Head of Technology - Data & AI Engineering - Hawthorn East We're seeking a senior technology leader to architect and lead scalable, high-performance AI/ML and data solutions within Coles Technology.About the teamThe Data Team focuses on building data collection and analytics capabilities to uncover customer, product, and operational insights, providing data-driven support to enable Coles to be a data-driven organisation.About the roleThis position will be pivotal in architecting and leading the development of scalable AI/ML and data solutions, with a focus on delivering measurable business value and seamless deployment into domain-specific applications and systems.Responsibilitieslead domain-specific squads including software engineers, data engineers, ML engineers, data scientists, and UX designersensure measurable business value from AI and data engineering efforts, aligning with corporate plan outcomesintegrate AI solutions into domain-specific applications and systems for effective deploymentestablish best practices for software development, data engineering, and AI/ML model developmentimplement and optimize automation for rapid and reliable deploymentsensure AI and data solutions comply with security and compliance requirementscollaborate with product and platform leads for smooth integration of AI solutions and data infrastructurecultivate a culture of experimentation and continuous improvementmake procurement decisions and implement in-house builds or vendor solutionsYou will build strong relationships between product teams, technology leaders, and enterprise stakeholders to define priorities, report on progress, and integrate AI and data solutions into business initiatives while elevating the software engineering practice within Data and AI disciplines.You will provide thought leadership and maintain a strong technical understanding of evolving AI and data domains, informing corporate roadmaps and capabilities.Effective communication and strategic alignment are essential to influence beyond technology.Experience requiredProven experience in AI/ML engineering with progression into management rolesProven ability to design and architect complex, scalable AI/ML systems and data pipelinesSoftware engineering background with strong programming skillsExperience with GenAI and agentic workflowsExtensive experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP)Combination of software engineering and machine learning experienceExperience with cloud data platforms (Snowflake, DataBricks) and reporting tools (Power BI)Experience with MLOps practices (CI/CD, model monitoring, etc.)Experience building AI models and integrating them into business workflowsExperience in complex corporate environments; retail experience preferredUnderstanding of delivering under Agile methodologyCommercial Skills and Formal QualificationsProficiency in programming languages like Python, Java, or C++Experience with ML frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn)Knowledge of data engineering tools and technologies (Spark, Kafka, databases)Leadership and team management skillsGood understanding of software architectureBachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Maths, or related fieldWhat's in it for you?
