Legal counsel (adelaide)

Adelaide
Assembly Four
Compliance Director
Posted: 4 June
Offer description

We are Assembly Four, a fast growing, purpose-driven technology company dedicated to fostering positive change within the sex work, human rights, LGBTQIA+, and intersecting communities. We operate on the belief that impact is as important as profit and work in collaboration with sex workers from around the globe to develop products and services that empower them to thrive, not just survive. Everyone should have the autonomy to make decisions about their bodies and sexual lives without fear of violence or discrimination – a fundamental human right that sex workers are still fighting for.

What you'll do

* Provide timely, accurate, and practical legal advice to internal stakeholders within your area of responsibility under the supervision of the General Counsel.
* Manage a portfolio of legal matters, including recurring operational issues and low‑to‑medium risk matters, escalating appropriately where issues exceed delegated authority or risk tolerance.
* Support product, operational, and people teams by identifying legal risks, requirements, and options early in planning and delivery.
* Assist in translating legal advice into explicit actions, guidance, and documentation for the business.
* Work closely within cross‑functional teams to support the management, moderation and development of Assembly Four's products.

About you

* A Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor and admission to practice in Victoria or any other Australian jurisdiction (except SA).
* 3–6 years legal post‑qualification experience in a reputable law firm and/or in‑house legal team, with exposure to commercial, regulatory law relevant to Assembly Four's operations.
* Experience in highly regulated industries, technology or privacy will be highly regarded.
* Ethically motivated and driven by social impact – you take an active interest in diversity and the empowerment of marginalised communities and prioritise human rights and values as an integral part of your work.
* Demonstrate solid technical legal skills and the ability to apply established law, precedents, and templates to day‑to‑day matters with limited supervision.
* Able to identify legal risk and assess its materiality in context.
* Communicate legal advice clearly and practically to non‑legal audiences and demonstrate the ability to bring together cross‑functional teams to achieve great outcomes.
* Possess both commercial acumen and human empathy, with the ability to balance both heart and mind in your decision making.
* You know what you know, are curious about what you don't, and are prepared to have your assumptions challenged.
* Interested in learning about the complex intersection of laws and regulations that affect technology products, sex work, human rights, LGBTQIA+, and intersecting communities.

In an ideal world, you would also have

* Previous experience engaging with and a willingness to learn about marginalised communities, particularly sex workers, neurodivergent individuals, and people with disability.
* Experience in or a strong understanding of sex work.
* Experience working in both technology startup environments and remote / hybrid work settings.

Why join us at Assembly Four?

At Assembly Four, you'll be part of a team dedicated to driving meaningful change for some of the world's most marginalised communities, supported in an environment that values social impact, collaboration, and personal well‑being.

Here's what's on offer

* Flexible work: 4‑day (32‑hour) work week at 100% pay, plus time in lieu for additional hours worked.
* Competitive compensation: Salary of $146,000 + super, based on your skills and experience.
* Fully remote: Work from anywhere with a remote work stipend to help set up your ideal workspace.
* Wellness benefits: Access to a wellbeing stipend, mental health support, and mental health first aid accreditation for leaders.
* Generous leave: 4 weeks of annual leave, 4 weeks of personal/carer's leave, flexible public holidays, and unpaid leave when needed.
* Profit share: Each year, if Assembly Four is profitable, a portion of that profit is distributed to our people.
* Parental leave: Access to generous paid parental leave options designed to support you, your family, and your return to work.

Important note: This is a permanent role open to residents of Australia (excluding South Australia and Tasmania). You will need to have the right to work in Australia to be eligible for this position.
