I'm working with a major player in Australia's energy infrastructure space to find a Commercial Manager who can take real ownership of how they shape and manage their energy services and customer connection deals. If you enjoy sitting at the pointy end of commercial decisions – where customers, engineers, finance and legal all meet – this will be right up your alley.
The opportunity
This role reports to the Commercial Director and is tightly connected to the people running customer connections, energy services and major projects.
You won't be a "back office" reviewer. You'll be involved early, helping to frame the deal, test the numbers, think through the risk, and make sure what's agreed can actually be delivered in the real world.
What you'll be doing
Rather than a long list of "manage this / oversee that", the crux of the role is:
* Being the commercial lead on key energy services and customer connection opportunities – from first conversation through to signed agreement and beyond
* Shaping how deals are structured: pricing, risk allocation, performance settings, incentives and how the relationship will work over the long term
* Working with finance to pressure-test the numbers and make sure the commercials stack up – now and over the life of the agreement
* Translating complexity into clear choices for senior leaders – "here are the options, here's the upside and downside, and here's what I recommend"
* Keeping existing agreements in good shape – renewals, changes in scope, performance issues and those "grey area" questions that inevitably come up
* Joining the dots between commercial, engineering, delivery and operations so contracts reflect how the business actually runs, not just legal theory
* Keeping an eye on what's changing in the market and regulation and adjusting commercial approaches so the business stays competitive and protected
About you:
You're probably in a commercial, commercial advisory, or contracts-focused role today and looking for more ownership, more variety and more influence. You'll likely bring:
* Experience in a commercial role within energy, utilities, telecommunications, infrastructure or a related sector
* Strong feel for how value is created over the life of a deal – revenue, margin, risk, service levels, capex/opex, all the levers
* Confidence around contracts – you don't need to be a lawyer, but you know how terms play out in practice and aren't afraid to challenge wording that doesn't work commercially
* Comfort with financial models – you can sit with finance, ask the right questions and translate the outputs into decisions
* A calm, constructive approach in negotiations – firm when you need to be, but focused on long-term relationships rather than "winning" one clause
* The ability to work with a broad mix of people – executives, engineers, project managers, finance, legal and external partners
* Good writing skills – you can pull together succinct papers and emails that help busy leaders make decisions
What's on offer
* Senior commercial role in a business that's central to Australia's energy transition
* A genuine seat at the table on customer connections and energy services deals that really matter
* The chance to work across a mix of new opportunities and existing strategic relationships
* Competitive package and strong longer-term career options as the business continues to grow
