Senior Manager ESG Risk (12 Month Parental Leave) – Commonwealth Bank
As Senior Manager Environmental Social and Governance (ESG) Risk, you will lead a small team supporting CommBank’s business banking customers and the relationship executives who serve them, through transition. This is a high‑impact, high‑visibility and high‑accountability role. You will work directly with senior stakeholders in distribution, product, Line 1 risk, Line 2 risk and Group E&S;, and shape the bank’s longer‑term approach to ESG risk management.
This is a 12‑month parental leave opportunity from January 2026 – December 2026.
Role sits within the CBA Business Banking ESG team, part of the Major Client Group division. The team is accountable for designing frameworks and processes that support the management of ESG risk across the bank.
Responsibilities
- Lead the delivery of the bank’s ESG strategy and risk initiatives.
- Establish and improve processes to better manage risk associated with ESG topics.
- Work closely with risk management and compliance teams to ensure relevant ESG risk frameworks are implemented.
- Identify roadblocks or dependencies that could impact specific workstreams or projects and resolve them.
- Take ownership of risk‑related outcomes and associated workstreams/projects end‑to‑end, independently managing deliverables.
- Contribute to developing the internal ESG capabilities of staff through education and engagement.
- Contribute content and information to the bank’s ESG disclosures (e.g., Climate Report, Contemporary Slavery & Human Trafficking Statement).
- Write and present formal papers for Business Banking Risk Committees.
- Provide regular updates on ESG initiatives, portfolio risk reporting and outcomes of ESG risk assessments.
Qualifications
- Experience or expertise in sustainability, climate science and/or social impact within a banking context.
- Demonstrated critical thinking and problem‑solving skills, with a proven ability to navigate ambiguity and proactively drive change in dynamic environments.
- Solid understanding of non‑financial risk management; experience working in a risk or product team.
- Excellent written communication skills for writing high‑quality papers for risk committees, drafting guidelines, documenting decisions related to ESG risk assessments.
- Ability to work autonomously, make sound decisions, use judgement to escalate when required, and engage with a broad range of stakeholders in sometimes challenging conversations.
