Field Training Officer
The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) requires a Field Training Officer (FTO) to plan, schedule and deliver field training for Antarctic and sub‐Antarctic operations. The FTO supports teams in the field, coordinates station search and rescue readiness, and, during winter, assumes Senior Field Training Officer (SFTO) responsibilities.
Roles and Responsibilities
* Plan, schedule and deliver field training programs.
* Support expedition teams during field operations.
* Coordinate station search and rescue readiness.
* During winter, assume SFTO duties.
Essential Qualifications and Licences
* Significant outdoor guiding or leading experience in remote wilderness settings within the last 5 years, with a relevant qualification such as Certificate IV in Outdoor Education, Diploma of Outdoor Education, Bachelor of Education (Outdoor Education) or equivalent; or an Adult Teaching qualification.
* Wilderness First Aid qualification (WFA, PHEC) or equivalent/higher.
* Climbing qualification: Single‐pitch or multi‐pitch instructor's qualification (ACIA, PACI or other recognised authority) or equivalent.
* A current, unrestricted Australian driver's licence – "C" class manual.
* Australian citizenship; non‐citizens may be considered only when no suitable Australian applicants exist.
Desirable Qualifications and Licences
* Coxswain Certificate of Competencies.
* Chain saw, quad bike, and snow‐mobile certification.
Obtain Prior to Commencement
* Valid passport with expiry at least six months beyond intended stay in Antarctica or sub‐Antarctic.
Prior Deployment Requirements
* Provide First Aid (HLTAID011) valid for at least 18 months beyond commencement.
* Basic Emergency Life Support (HLTAID010) valid for at least 18 months beyond commencement.
* CPR (HLTAID009) valid for at least six months beyond commencement.
Knowledge and Experience
* Instructional ability, including preparing and delivering training in field trip planning, risk assessment, group management, environmental awareness, field skills (stoves, shelters), navigation (GPS), communications (radios, satellite), snow survival, search and rescue, rope work, and glacial travel.
* Organisational ability and leadership experience supporting remote field expeditions.
* Teamwork, autonomy and following directives from SFTO or Station Leader.
Senior Field Training Officer
The Senior Field Training Officer (SFTO) leads the planning, scheduling, and delivery of Antarctic and sub‐Antarctic field training. Depending on the station and season, the SFTO may work independently or supervise a team of FTOs, coordinating field safety and developing search and rescue capability at station level.

* Coordinate field safety and search and rescue capability at the station.
* Supervise and develop FTOs as required.
