About Us
The Medical Decision Unit (MDU) provides rapid assessment of internal medical patients presenting to the Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH) Emergency Department (ED) by the General Internal Medical team. This model limits unnecessary investigations and multiple internal referrals to inpatient medical teams by providing early assessment and review by senior clinicians.
Early discharge is facilitated for suitable patients and rapid referral to appropriate specialists occurs where inpatient subspecialty internal medical care is required. To operationalise this model, a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care is necessary. The MDU aims to provide quality, efficient, multi-disciplined, evidenced based, patient and family focused care.
The aim of the MDU is to provide care that exceeds the consumer's expectations in a model that is continually evaluating its processes and efficiency to ensure sustainability and robustness of an ever changing health care system.
