The Don River Railway (DRR), operated by The Van Diemen Light Railway Society Inc., is a beloved heritage railway and a premier tourist attraction in Tasmania, dedicated to recreating living railway history.
Our Mechanical Workshop is the heart of our operational capability, a heavy industry environment vital for the preservation, restoration, and ongoing maintenance of our historic fleet.
This workshop is where our trains are kept running safely and authentically.
The Opportunity
We are seeking a highly experienced and dedicated individual to volunteer as our Workshop Manager.
This is a critical leadership role, arguably equivalent to a full-time position in its scope, requiring a significant commitment to oversee all aspects of the Mechanical Workshop.
You will be responsible for managing workshop operations, ensuring safety compliance, leading our team of skilled trades volunteers, and driving key restoration projects.

Key Responsibilities & Duties:
Oversee daily operations of the Mechanical Workshop, ensuring efficient workflow and productivity.
Lead, mentor, and coordinate a diverse team of volunteer fitters, welders, turners, engineers, and diesel mechanics.
Ensure strict adherence to all DRR safety procedures, workshop competencies, and regulatory compliance (including ONRSR requirements).
Plan, schedule, and manage restoration and maintenance projects for locomotives and rollingstock.
Manage workshop resources, including tools, equipment, and materials.
Collaborate with the Rail Operations Manager and President on fleet operational readiness and strategic planning.
Implement and maintain effective workshop management systems and documentation.
Foster a positive, safe, and productive workshop culture.
