Primary objective
The Witness Assistance Officer provides support and assistance to witnesses, victims of crime and their families during their
involvement with the criminal justice system.

Context statement
The position is based in Darwin and is required to attend the Darwin Local Court, Supreme Court and remote Circuit Courts to
provide support to victims, witnesses and their families. The position works closely with prosecutors and other agencies to ensure
the best outcomes for victims and witnesses during the court process. The position is required to regularly travel to remote
communities with overnight stays and may require work outside normal business hours.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide a high level of professional support, information and assistance to victims, witnesses and their families throughout their

experience of the court system.
2. Monitoring of case progress to ensure effective case management.
3. Assist with the positive promotion of the Witness Assistance Service, including community education activities and

presentations.
4. Develop and maintain effective communication links and networks with key stakeholders.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills appropriate for working in a legal workplace with a broad range of

stakeholders in urban and remote contexts.
2. Experience in the legal or social welfare or educational sector and knowledge of the criminal justice system in the Northern

Territory.
3. Proven ability to work effectively in a cross-cultural environment by demonstrating an understanding of the issues which affect

Indigenous victims, witnesses, and their families.
4. Ability to work as part of a geographically diverse team, support productive working relationships and contribute to the

development of plans, strategies, and team goals.
5. Demonstrated organisational skills for effective prioritising of tasks and monitoring of case progress to ensure effective case-

management.
6. Ability to develop and maintain networks and contacts in urban and remote contexts, with knowledge of the facilities and

services available to victims of crime within Darwin and surrounding region.
7. Hold (or have the capacity to obtain) a current NT driver's licence and Working with Children Clearance (OCHRE card), and

willingness to travel to remote locations by light aircraft/4WD.

Desirable
1. Tertiary qualification in Law, Social Work, Community Welfare or similar.
