Fish Habitat Restoration Specialist
Catchment Solutions is a Queensland based environmental service provider that is offering an exciting opportunity to work in our Fish Passage and Aquatic Ecosystems team. The business is growing rapidly and we a looking for someone who is passionate about working with fish in both freshwater and marine habitats. The role provides a mix of office and field-based work and provides the flexibility for a motivated person to pursue projects in their field of interest.
Role Description
As part of the Fish Passage and Aquatic Ecosystems team you will be expected to:
* Provide technical advice on fish habitat management and restoration actions to deliver tangible benefits for our fisheries resources and aquatic habitats
* Manage the delivery of habitat restoration and monitoring projects -
Supervision and mentoring of junior staff
Resource allocation/budgeting – staff, subcontractors, equipment and materials
Field monitoring
Construction supervision
Data analysis, reporting and project communications
* Maintain and develop relationships with a range of government and non-government stakeholders
* Develop project proposals for open grant funding opportunities
* Prepare quotes for tendered projects or client-initiated scopes of work
* Occasionally assist with project delivery for other work groups within Catchment Solutions
* Promote a safe, respectful and inclusive workplace
The team is currently working on projects in Tasmania, South East Queensland, North Queensland and the Gulf of Carpentaria which include:
* Design and construction
Fishways
Fish habitat restoration – freshwater, estuarine and coastal
Artificial habitat reefs, all-water FADS, engineered log jams, holistic bank stabilisation, water quality treatment trains, constructed wetlands
* Fish community monitoring
Boat and backpack electrofishing, netting, fishway trapping, eDNA, underwater video
Pest fish management
* Aquatic habitat management
Fish barrier prioritisations
GIS spatial analysis, field validation, reporting and stakeholder engagement
Habitat classification and restoration plans
Fish passage and habitat restoration development permits
Experience, Qualifications and Personal Traits
To be suited for this position with Catchment Solutions you will ideally have:
* Tertiary and / or post graduate qualifications in Estuarine / Aquatic Ecology or Biology or Environmental Engineering
* 7+ years' professional experience in a project management or research position
* Exposure to project coordination, management, reporting and budgeting
* Highly developed computer skills with proficiency in MS word and excel
* Experience in statistical analysis, spatial analysis, computer aided drafting or database management – desirable
* A commitment to uphold high ethical standards
* A commitment to maintaining a safe working environment
* Experience in business operations and client management
* A hands-on approach to service delivery with experience in leading by example in consulting or research positions
* Well-developed interpersonal communication skills including demonstrated abilities in mentoring and staff supervision
* Highly developed written and oral communications with the capacity for original and strategic thought
* A valid car licence
* A valid recreational marine drivers licence or coxswain qualifications - desirable
Ideally this position will be based in Mackay, however alternative base locations will be considered for suitable candidates. Anyone interested in this role most likely has an affinity for the water and for those who may consider relocating to Mackay the region has much to offer. The Whitsundays and Great Barrier Reef are on our doorstep. Boating and diving opportunities are endless. Fishing is also fantastic whether it's chasing barramundi in the dams, mangrove jack or threadfin salmon in the estuaries, or offshore fishing on the Reef. … it's all on offer.
