Legal Advisor – Office of the General Counsel

* Provide legal advice and support to the Office of the General Counsel branch.
* Ongoing, full-time position.
* VPS Grade 4: $97,955-$111,142 plus superannuation.

About the Business Unit:

Join a high-profile team at the centre of government, advising on and leading a variety of legal matters across the justice system.

The Office of the General Counsel (OGC) provides in-house legal services across the Department of Justice and Community Safety, supporting the Attorney-General and other DJCS Ministers.

OGC supports policy and frontline services for clients including Corrections Victoria, Youth Justice, Aboriginal Justice, Emergency Management, Tobacco Licensing Victoria, and Gaming and Liquor.

Our team comprises lawyers from diverse backgrounds working on interesting and impactful legal issues, fostering a unique environment for learning and growth.

The Public Law and Litigation team (PLL) within OGC handles a broad range of legal matters in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

About the Role:

The PLL team works on a variety of legal issues, including:

* Providing solutions-based legal and policy advice, both written and oral, to government, ministers, and departmental clients, either independently or as part of a team.
* Managing multiple complex and sensitive matters (litigation and advisory) for various clients independently.
* Conducting legal research and analysis on complex issues, demonstrating strong statutory interpretation skills.

About You:

Our ideal candidate will possess:

* Strong legal skills with the ability to analyze complex operational, policy, and legal issues, interpret legislation, and develop accurate legal solutions, seeking supervision when necessary.
* Experience providing legal advice on public or administrative law, or in civil or criminal litigation.
* Knowledge of Victorian Government and Cabinet processes is desirable.

Qualifications / Requirements:

* Admitted or eligible to be admitted as a legal practitioner in Victoria.
