As we continue to grow, we are seeking an experienced Senior Civil Designer to join our collaborative and high-performing team.
Overview
The Senior Civil Designer plays a key role in the successful delivery of infrastructure, civil, and mining projects. This role involves leading the design and drafting of civil works, contributing to project concept development, and ensuring design outputs meet industry standards, client requirements, and regulatory obligations.
You will work closely with engineers, project managers, and fellow designers to deliver high-quality documentation within required timeframes and budgets.
Responsibilities
Design & Drafting
* Produce civil engineering designs and detailed drawings using Civil 3D (preferred) or 12D, supported by AutoCAD.
* Prepare 3D design models for use from concept design through to detailed design and construction, including:
* Surface (tin) creation and modification
* Use of alignments, corridors, long sections, and cross sections
* Surface and structure drainage design and understanding
* Bulk earthwork modelling with understanding of staged construction
* Roads and access tracks (including sweptpath analysis)
* Intersections
* Bulk earthworks
* Mine and/or large site civil infrastructure
* Stormwater management
* Site grading layouts integrating with site infrastructure
* Carparks, hardstands, building platforms, utilities and services
* Prepare design sketches, conceptual layouts, and feasibility-level design options.
Data Collection & Analysis
* Gather and interpret survey data, GIS information, geotechnical data, environmental constraints, and asset information.
* Review and validate data inputs to ensure accuracy in design models.
* Work closely with engineers, project managers, and other designers to refine design concepts.
* Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams (e.g. structural, mechanical, environmental, planners).
* Participate in design reviews, client workshops, and technical meetings.
* Coordinate project design models through collaborative Building Information Modelling (BIM) or Common Data Environments (CDE).
* Support junior designers and drafters through mentorship, checking, and technical guidance.
Quality, Compliance & Documentation
* Ensure all design deliverables are technically correct solutions that are fit for purpose and comply with relevant standards including:
* Austroads
* Queensland/State local authority design standards
* Relevant Australian Standards
* Client-specific technical specifications
* Safety in Design (SiD) principles
* Prepare design reports, design decision logs, and calculations where required.
* Conduct drawing reviews, design checks, clash detection, and model audits.
* Maintain version control and compliance with JBU Group's QA processes.
Project Delivery & Time Management
* Develop design inputs for project programs and assist with estimating design hours.
* Manage personal workload and deliverables to meet project commitments across cost, quality, and time.
* Proactively identify risks, issues, or design conflicts and escalate as needed.
* Contribute to continuous improvement in design processes and modelling standards.
Required Skills, Qualifications & Experience
Technical Skills
* Advanced proficiency in:
* And/or 12D (strong experience, highly regarded)
* AutoCAD (required)
* Strong working knowledge of:
* Road geometry and earthworks modelling
* Drainage and stormwater design fundamentals (no hydraulic engineering required)
* Surface modelling, digital terrain models, and volume calculations
* BIM/CDE environments and model-based delivery
* Microsoft Office Software (Word, Excel, Teams, SharePoint and PowerPoint)
* Ability to interpret engineering sketches, specifications, and survey data.
* Understanding of Safety in Design and constructability requirements.
Experience
* Minimum 5–8 years of experience as a Civil Designer in consultancy or mining infrastructure.
* Experience working within ISO-accredited quality systems (or similar).
* Previous exposure to mining, resources, or regional infrastructure projects is highly advantageous.
