About the role
The Exploration team at Fleet Space Technologies, is responsible for driving and conducting cutting-edge research and development (R&D;) activities within the company. This role is at the forefront of innovation, applying experience gained in mechatronic engineering to help develop new technologies to advance exploration both on earth and in space.
The Mid-Level Mechatronics Engineer is responsible for working across all Exploration team projects, providing direct input from a mechatronics engineering perspective as well as contributing (via research, analysis, interpretation and teamwork) to the broader team objectives. In addition to mechatronics engineering, expertise in other fields such as aerospace and systems engineering, is highly regarded.
Reporting to the Exploration Engineering Manager, you will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including but not limited to geophysicists, program managers, engineers, client managers, manufacturing teams and technical leadership, as well as other internal and external stakeholders.
Success in this role requires a curiosity-first mindset towards understanding new concepts and applying knowledge to develop them further. It is anticipated that this role will be multidisciplinary and involve significant teamwork across projects within a fast-paced agile setting.
Role Responsibilities
- Conceptualisation, design, and analysis of mechatronic systems.
- Code development for high-power microcontrollers and microprocessors.
- Application of mechatronics engineering for both terrestrial and space systems development.
- Collaboration with internal teams on the development of technical requirements.
- Execute finite element analyses of digital models for terrestrial and space environments.
- Support the engineering manager with high-level system design and concepts of operation
- Create and maintain comprehensive documentation, including design specifications, test reports, and integration guidelines to support project transparency and compliance.
- Identify, analyse, and resolve technical challenges, applying both analytical and creative approaches to optimise system performance.
What we are looking for:
- 2-5 years of professional experience in mechatronic engineering, ideally from Satellite or Aerospace companies
- Bachelor's or higher Degree in Mechatronics or related fields of study such as Aerospace or Systems Engineering
- Expertise in developing mechatronic systems for R&D; applications.
- Ability to write code (C, C++, Python, or Rust) for high-power microcontrollers and microprocessors.
- Experience with CAD software and simulation tools to support detailed design and analysis.
- Familiarity with the traditional systems engineering methodology
- Excellent written and verbal communication, including the ability to provide context and recommendations on experimental results.
- Strong administrative skills with a good understanding of the importance of thorough documentation.
- A natural problem solver with the ability to quickly adapt and re-prioritise.
- Organised and detail-oriented mindset
Bonus if you also have:
- Experience using Confluence/Jira for documentation and project management
- Experience in writing firmware for embedded systems
- Prior experience with satellite or spacecraft development
- Interest in developing a systems engineering practice for terrestrial and space projects
About Fleet Space
Fleet Space Technologies vision from the beginning was to build technologies to help humanity explore and connect the Earth, Moon, and Mars.
This led us to develop and launch one of Australia's largest constellation of satellites, create our satellite-enabled mineral exploration technology (ExoSphere), and send Australia's first seismic technology (SPIDER) to the Moon in 2026. ExoSphere, our end-to-end mineral exploration solution powered by space and AI, aims to accelerate critical mineral discovery needed for the clean energy technologies foundational to humanity's clean energy future.
As part of Fleet's founding vision, we also apply our technology to innovative solutions for defense and space exploration, including an upcoming mission to the Moon. Headquartered in Adelaide, South Australia, Fleet has rapidly grown to over 160 employees including a growing team in the USA, Canada, and beyond.
We have raised over $200M AUD in venture funding, backed by premier investors including Blackbird, TVG, Grok, and In-Q-Tel including our most recent $150m Series D in December 2024, at a valuation of over $800m.
In 2023 we were recognised by the Australian Financial Review (AFR) as the #1 fastest growing technology company in Australia.
