Details: Applications are sought to fill the position of Senior Director, Legal, Coroners Court.
The Executive Director, Legal (Coroner's Court) is responsible for supporting the work of the Chief Coroner, Coroners and Registrar of the Coroners Court. This includes legal advising, appearance in Court as required, and responsibility for management and oversight of the Coroners Team and Forensic Medicine Centre.
Under the limited direction of the Registrar of the Coroners Court, the Executive Director, Legal (Coroner's Court) will:
* Provide advice to coroners in more complex and sensitive matters.
* In more complex cases, assume carriage of coronial files to manage, including appearing before the coroner as counsel assisting the coroner, or instructing counsel assisting the coroner.
* Provide legal advice and support to the Chief Coroner, Coroners, Registrar and Senior Executive of ACTCT on the implications of new legislation, policy proposals and options for implementation on complex or significant legislative amendments.
* Liaise with investigators, families, legal representatives, witnesses, other interested parties and key stakeholders.
* Provide leadership in the establishment, development and maintenance of policies and procedures in relation to the operation of the Coroner's Court.
* Lead capability building initiatives and opportunities for the development and wellbeing of staff.
Eligibility/Other Requirements
This position requires a degree in laws of an Australian tertiary institution, or a comparable overseas qualification, which, in the opinion of the Chief Executive Officer and Principal Registrar, is appropriate to the duties of the office.
This position requires admission as a legal practitioner, however described, of the High Court or the Supreme Court of an Australian State or Territory.
The successful candidate will be required to undergo a National Criminal History check.
