**Who we are**
**Biosecurity Operations Division** deliver nationally integrated biosecurity and imported food regulatory activities to ensure goods, conveyances and travellers meet Australia's import requirements. Division operations include policy and regulatory control setting across imported food and biosecurity risk pathways, as well as the delivery of assessment, inspection, community engagement and contact centre services. The division also partners with industry to improve the delivery of regulatory functions. The division spans a range of regulatory activities that plays a critical role in reducing risk and shaping our nation to become one of the few countries in the world to remain free from the world's most severe pests and diseases.

**In Mail Operations**, we are a team of biosecurity officers who work in international mail centres, screening and inspecting international mail items for biosecurity risk material. We work in international mail facilities located in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney. **The Job**
The main duties of a Biosecurity Officer in an international mail facility may include, but are not limited to:

- performing a range of screening (x-ray) and inspection of international mail, to ensure that it meets Australia's strict biosecurity requirements,
- managing international mail that does not meet biosecurity requirements,
- identifying and reporting trends in biosecurity risks
- complying with appropriate standards of behaviour in line with departmental expectations as well as the APS Code of Conduct and Values,
- following departmental WHS and Rehabilitation policies and guidelines and being alert for and reporting risks to local management and WHS,
- once trained, providing on-the-job coaching, and assisting and supporting other employees on biosecurity issues.

**Please note the following**:

- This selection process will be used to fill multiple vacancies, both ongoing and non-ongoing. The merit pool established through this selection process, which is valid for a period of eighteen months from the date the vacancy was advertised in the Gazette, may also be used to fill future ongoing and non-ongoing vacancies in the division where the duties are of a similar nature.
- It is important to note that current vacancies are located at the Sydney International Mail Facility in Clyde NSW, but the merit pool will be used to fill any upcoming vacancies in all three mail facilities.
- The physical requirements of the role(s) involve a combination of outdoor and office-based work and that the physical environment is similar to a warehouse.
- Mail Operation positions in Sydney require the ability to perform shiftwork. For other gateways, note that they may require to perform occasional out-of-hours and weekend work.
- Once suitably trained and assessed, biosecurity officers can expect to be deployed across multiple pathways and functions in response to business needs within their location.
