* $170,000 + super + bonus (up to $8k)
* Enjoy a great project flow without having to bring in all the work.
* Newcastle-based role with Sydney flexibility
As a Principal / Associate Ecologist, you’ll step into a genuine leadership role at a moment that matters. The previous team lead has moved into industry, leaving behind a well-trained, high-performing ecology team that now needs direction, mentoring and a steady hand to keep momentum moving forward.
This is a proper “goldilocks” consultancy role. Big enough to deliver meaningful, complex projects with national backing, but not so big that you’re buried in process, approvals chains or internal politics. People come first here, flexibility is real, and the focus stays on doing good work with good clients.
You’ll be based in Newcastle (preferred), embedded within a broader environmental science group, with national discipline leads sitting alongside you helping bring work in so you can focus on leading and delivering, not endlessly chasing pipeline.
The Role
You’ll lead the NSW ecology function, guiding delivery, mentoring staff and acting as the senior ecological voice on projects.
What that looks like day to day:
* Lead and mentor a Newcastle-based team of four ecologists
* Oversee delivery of ecological assessments supporting approvals and EIS work
* Provide technical review and strategic input across flora and fauna projects
* Work closely with planning and approvals specialists where disciplines overlap
* Support project scoping and delivery without carrying sole BD responsibility
* Help grow ecology workload organically through collaboration with national leads
* There’s no requirement to be BAM accredited–the team already has that covered –but experience winning and delivering that work is useful.
Team & Culture
You’ll be joining a collaborative, delivery-focused consultancy with around 100 staff nationally and access to a much larger international network when needed. Locally, the Newcastle office is well-supported, pragmatic and technically strong, with senior leaders on the ground to back you.
This is not a hierarchy-heavy environment. It suits someone who enjoys leading from the front, supporting good people, and keeping projects moving without corporate noise getting in the way.
What You’ll Bring
* Senior experience in terrestrial ecology within consulting
* Confidence leading teams and reviewing technical work
* Strong understanding of NSW approvals-led ecology
Package:
$170,000 + super + performance bonus (up to $8k)
